you can make something like an emp gun using the magnetrons form microwaves depending on how strong you want to make it you can knock out anything from computers to cars. one of the TRONS at my shop made one with a kit he got from some place (I'll post page when I can ask him the address..he's in IRAQ now.) well it destroyed a computer pretty easily.

I would imagine that the ECU is somewhat shielded from this kind of nonsense. I mean, it would have to be to withstand varying events in the environment. I saw a lightning bolt strike directly on top of an SUV and the thing kept on driving, not even knowing what hit it. Something large and electrical like that could potentially fry unshielded electronics. Anyways, it just seems really unfeasable that someone could create something like in F&F without it being incredibly impractical to use.

 

Current will flow through a car no problem and it wont hurt the vehicle. Lighning can stirke and it will have no effect on the vehicle. We used to have to keep a 100,000 V electric fence charger hooked up to our cars because the neighbors dog would come over and jump up on them. Lets just say the dog never did that again.



You would have to use a fairly strong EMP. The only other way is how I believe the ones from the movie work. I would think those work by disturbing the frequency of the wiring, espicially the ignition and injectors. Thats why when they shot the car, the display was fuzzy and the car didnt shut right down. An EMP would knock the car out instantly.

It fires a high current oscillating wave that can cause disruptions in the electrical system. It's called a current ripple, and sensitive electronics can go crazy.



It's not an EMP. EMP does not need contact for it to work.

It should not be long before very small EMP generators are out there - I've seen them being tested (on TV), and initials experiements have been very effective. The charge is set off under the car when the vehicle runs it over, and it triggers. Once triggered, it shoots an EMP pulse straight upward, so affecting other nearby electronics is minimized. The car literally shuts down in seconds.
