Are they rope, or straps? http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/recovery.html This is what I use to "yank" someone out. If I have the time I prefer to use tow straps and a Hi-Lift Jack, as I don't have a winch. That's the preferred method, but in a pinch the recovery straps work very well.

Lucky it was just the tie strap, and not part of the frame, or a hook if they were using tow straps.

That's using a tow strap, and trying to yank them out. Bad bad idea.

the frame on the car was bent about 45 degrees to the left and up, on BOTH sides, we cut a pie shaped peice out of the right rail, and when it was straight, the pie cut was closed enough just to weld it up.... it also broke ALL the spot welds on the inner wheel sheet metal.

but it didnt affect the alignment much, and the car set its fastest lap around midnight, before the stapler sized chunk of metal came thru the window

those are what i have, those are rope just fancy rope.

plus if you read that site:

"This ability to stretch is a distinction between a ****** strap and a tow strap, ARB ****** straps are elastic when under load whereas a tow strap is not, the benefits of which are twofold"

under load the strap stretches and is effective, that doesnt mean you yank people with it. im telling you no strap or chain out there is designed to have a sudden stress of like 5k lbs put on it, not even the super straps they use to pull boats off the ocean, those things can handle like 10 tons each, but if you were to try yanking it the weight limit drops dramatically. no strap/rope etc is made to be as powerful when its yanked as when you slowly apply a load.

i have a hi-lift, but once we put the new winch on one of the tractors the hi-lift and most of the straps have been growing cobwebs.

I still prefer a high lift over a winch, I've heard of some bad stories with winches and idiots. I know they make a different cord for winches though that isn't cable, I'd prefer that, but I don't have a winch. Like I said the recovery straps, I'll put about five feet run into and that's about it. If it requires more than that, I'll get the hi lift out.
