Wraith's story does make sense, hell, my roomate's old Taurus wagon did over 100 once(DOWNHILL OF COURSE, but still)....don't trust a speedo. Like one poster already said, the only thing you can accurately trust is a cop's radar gun.


LOL... i know man i know.. taurus's were crazy family sedans.. why spend 30grand on a lexus when you could have a car with relative performance for under 20grand... i don't know how accurate his speedo was in a bmw at 120+ mph but since it was a bmw, i would consider it a little more accurate than others... maybe, maybe not.. but taurus's have no prob going over the rated motortrend speed... thats' a given.. critics.. ? cool.. but i lived it and laugh my *** off about it everytime...

I'm not sure that will ever be a solid resolution. The best method of speed checking is either by accurate third party monitoring (po-po radar) or usually a device that interprets and displays the speed digitally, eliminating the shortcomings of the gauge.



Not too long ago I was very excited to hit 99MPH in my '93 Bravada, then I realized that I had installed custom wheels which were 6% undersized, meaning I was actually only travelling 93MPH. Just another thing to think about - if the rolling diameter of the wheel/tire combo you employ is less than factory original. On my truck, if the speedo read 138, I would be traveling closer to 129.

The speedometer is a simple electromechanical device, it is required to be accurate enough to the higher legal speed limits. As an electromechanical device, the gauge has a certain degree of hysteresis. Although it is entirely possible.. I will eat these words if you ever get stopped for doing 138MPH and post a copy of your ticket, though!

Finally, Your reasoning sounds more credible than the rest. Thats what i was loooking for, something tha makes a lil sense on how a n/a cant or can do it. Not that , "N/a cant go that fast"

2nd gens are full of quirks, and certain engines will do things you didn't think they were capable of. I'd say it's possible for sure. After seeing some of the things i've seen out of 2nd gens I wouldn't be suprised if there were a few that could do it stock. our cars are weird fo sho



i think the 5th gear switch is what keeps most 2nd gens from reaching the top speed they are capable of. try disabling it and trying again. your mpg will go down in 5th, but the performance is the same as the other 4 gears.

I know this guy who lived in Germany and drove his na rx-7 on the auto ban. He averaged 130 every day and said that he got it up to 150. He's a sargent major in the army, so why would he lie.

Fastest I've ever gone in my 5 speed GXL was 124 mph (200 kmph).



I backed off after hitting that speed. It could have gone faster, but I doubt by very much. Even though it was still pulling, you could really feel it running out of steam.



I know a few locals with N/A Auto RX7s, and none of them can seem to get past 170 kmph.
