Going Rotary.

Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and I would just like to say hi as this is my first post here.

Now back to the topic. I have a 1983 Toyota Tercel that was given to me for free by my uncle and I took it as a project. I was thinking about an engine swap and was considering some Rotary power and going with a rear wheel drive setup as the car is fwd. The space in the engine bay I hope will be enough but I will post the space that I have available tommorrow. What rotary engine out there would you recommend and do you have anywhere that you can point me to in my quest to learn as much as I can about Rotary engines. Thanks in advance. :bigthumg:

I thought an '83 Tercel was rwd? Learn something new every day.



practical engine choices are as follows in order of power:



12A (1.1L)

13B (1.3L)

13B four-port (usually built up from 12A side housings and 13B rotor housings)

13B Turbo (as found in '86-'92 Turbo II)

13B-REW (the most expensive and not that big advantage over 13BT)



With any of these of course the more extreme your porting the more your power and worse driveability, just like putting a wilder cam in your piston motor.

Dj Rotor, The toyota Starlet is rwd, but the tercel also came in 4wd, which I hope to easily adapt the axles from. My Tercels' layout is that of rwd. The Engine and Transmission are not in a transverse fashion.

In terms of space, I have roughly 2'9" x 2'2" to work with. In terms of the 13BTurbo and the 20B which one would be better in terms of maintanence and power. What are their power numbers?

bigtime, I said "practical choices"



Put it this way, if you need more than 400rwhp you might want to consider a 20B. Less than that, don't bother. They are very heavy.



They are Japan only but maintenance is not that big a deal by all accounts, many parts are interchangeable between 20B and 13B.



Now I'm a bit confused here, I see you've converted the Tercel to rwd, but you want to use axles from a 4wd Tercel? You want to make it 4wd? Or just using the rear axle?

Sorry, but I have been busy with school finals. I'm not too sure about how much power they can handle. The engine that they come with are rated at somewhere around 65 hp or so.

Hmm . . . and that's split between two axles . . . so even a good running 12A @ about 150hp will put four times the load on it it was designed for . . . you sure this is a good idea?



Then again it is a Toyota part, it might work.
