I was told by the guy who installed my engine that theres a law permitting you to modify emissions (making it straight pipe...no cats) when your engine isnt the original one





basically, you have 3mm apex seals, porting done, ADDED a turbo ...you cannot get fined for not having any cats (loudness might be something else) or not respecting emission requirements.....



i'll have to check this out more deeply....

Just remember that will vary province to province. ie: In MB, there's no emission testing to begin with. Legislation pertaining to cars and highways is almost always provincial legislation.

The law is an obscure emissions law. When you change the engine out your car becomes a "hot rod" and goes in a different emissions catagory. It is also supposed to affect your insurance because when you change things on your car the insurance company SHOULD know about it so they can insure the actual value of the car.

A highly modified automobile cannot be exempt from emissions testing.

However, depending on the model year of the vehicle it may be classified

as a hot rod for emissions standards, and therefore tested under a more

lenient set of standards.



A hot rod is a motor vehicle, up to and including model year 1999, in

which the original motor has been replaced with a motor of a type not

installed by the manufacturer on that model year of motor vehicle;



Hot Rod Engine Change Policy



The owner is entirely responsible for demonstrating to a DCF that a

vehicle is a hot rod. The DCF is responsible for keeping a record on

the evidence provided that resulted in a Drive Clean test as a hot rod.



For the purposes of Drive Clean inspection and testing only, a hot rod

has a replacement motor that s completely different from the one

installed by the manufacturer.

So... would a 4-port n/a engine with a streetport, carb and turbocharged be considered a "hot rod" engine in an 88 GXL then?
