you can't simplify the EGT hot=lean cold=rich like that. If you can't afford a REAL A/F ie (FJO, techedge etc) don't bother, but the EGT is still worth having. Chances are you won't be doing your own tuning, but its still good to have. I overdid it with gauges, currently have boost, egt, watertemp, oil temp, and oil pressure. the techedge setup ends up being about 500US after you buy the sensor and i am currently saving for that.
no, you are right, its not that "simple" but its a basis. There is always a danger zone of heat for our cars, which lets you know, you are starting to run a bit lean.. heh.

And, your car will run as long as it wants to as long as you take care of it. Going any further than the mods i listed can lead to premature detonation. Our cars are very fickle, and adding more boost without adding more fuel is a bad equation. With the simple mods i listed, you can make around ~280rwhp, which is a lot of fun in a 2800lb car. Rotaries can pretty much give up whenever, sometimes they make the best compression before they blow, sometimes its the other way around. Fickle = Rotary.

Don't worry about modding it too much, just do the ones i listed and you will have a fun reliable sports car, able to beat 90% of the stuff you see on the street and track. You won't have to worry about spiking, creep, or any of the other nasty things that are associated with a midpipe. Just be careful, do one mod at a time, troubleshoot problems accordingly, and remember HAVE FUN!
