The stock ones are plastic and break. Pettit sells a metal one.

Your risking both boost SPIKE (from opening the intake side) and boost CREEP from opening the exhaust side. SPIKE can be handled by a good boost controller, either electric or manual. Not a big deal. CREEP is a different matter. It generally can only be dealt with by porting the wastegate (in these cars the WG is internal and requires removal of the turbos) OR by adding some restriction back in the exhaust, ala hi-flow cat. If your car is bone stock, you must still have the stock ECU, which means you can't just start adding bigger injectors to compensate. You'll need a PFC before doing that. Figure another $800 to $1200 depending on which one you get.

Many also find that with a straight exhaust (midpipe or testpipe) on a streeted car, it will be annoyingly (and illegally) loud. The smell also tends to make eyes water within 30 yards.

I'm just going to put the Apexi intake on for now and get a boost controller. What psi should I set it at and do I need anything else to put just the intake on?

Ok... so if you have a *completely* stock car the order of mods should be Reliability before power. Something along the lines of:



(from top to bottom)



Boost Gauge

DOWNPIPE

Radiator

AST (Air Seperation Tank)

Silicon Vac/rad hoses (old hoses crack and burst, causing all kinds of problems)

Stand-alone/piggy-back ECU (Motec, Apexi, Haltech, etc., whatever your tuner is good with)

Upgraded ECU (yes, I said it twice.. it's THAT important before you go ANY further)

ECU!!! (11psi is max safe limit on stocker.. 12=fuel cut and possible POP!) <~~3rd time's the charm?

Intake

Intercooler (I would stick with a good SMIC until you seriously start to mod the system and know what you are doing)

High-flow cat (Don't even CONSIDER going free flow until you know what's up, and have everything properly supported)

Cat-back



Get all this tuned and get used to driving the car with 280-300rwhp before you try to go further. A conservative tune should net you at least 280 to the wheels with this.

bigger fuel pump

After market knock sensor

My personal trek beyond what mods I listed was to first tighten up the driveline with a Dif Brace (was experiencing pretty bad wheel hop). I'd also look into upgrading or replacing the stock suspension (mine came with KYB Shocks/Tein springs). Then I went with a Datalogit (I have the PFC/Commander), HKS Twin Power Ignition Amp, transmission brace, Rotora Brake kit, Gram Lights 17x8.5/17x9.5 wheels, and other little things that needed doing.



Stocked up over the winter and in one fell swoop installed:



Exedy Stage 2 Clutch kit

BNR Stage 3 Sequential twins

"Efini" Y-pipe

850/850 injectors (I *really* don't think you need 1600cc secondaries unless you are going ***** to the wall and planning on more than 500 whp)

Aeromotive FPR (set to 50psi base pressure)

Bosch 044 Fuel pump (rewired)

Free-flow MP

GReddy Profec B, Spec II

Innovative LC-1 (mounted in tripower center gauge pod)

Fuel Pressure gauge (mounted in tripower center gauge pod)

3-bar MAP sensor (GM unfortunately... need to get an Apex'i unit)



Having it all tuned to 16psi this upcoming Tuesday, currently sitting on a basic map, locked to 7psi for the clutch break-up period.



Just need (want) a V-mount and nice working/looking vented hood. If I can rock out 400whp sequentially I'll be very happy, based off all the random little odd's and end's I also expect this to run reliably as a DD (if need be).





To the OP: **** as some of the guys on rx7club can be, I would *highly* suggest making an account there and browsing through all the stored knowledge there.. there is A LOT!

I'm just going to put my intake on for right now because my stock one got broken in the crash. I also have a boost gauge and a boost controller thats on their way. As far as suspension goes the car is not stock, thats the first thing I do to any of my cars.

I do have an account at rx7club, but I'm not ever on it cause any time I've posted on there I get *** hole comments back.
