Question

So it seems that after my recent rebuild my front turbo is now messing up on me.

Is this something that could be caused by me some how? I haven't had the chance to drive the car hard at all with not having my PFC until this past week and not wanting to drive it either due to it being winter in ohio (granted its been a rather mild winter...) but what could cause turbos to just go poo like they have in my car so fast?

The first time I had the turbos put on the car, they were already used and they worked for all of two days or so before the rear turbo's oil seal (think that's right) started going. Lost some major power and thought it was my car. Friend did a comp. check and found out the rides compression was fine. Kept smoking a lot though and then finally one day it just completely died. Oil came pouring out of the blow off valve (mine vents to atompshere) and a retarded amount of smoke just came billowing out the back.

Fast forward to having them rebuilt by the guy who usually takes care of my car.

Well, they never stopped smoking from the recent rebuild. I thought maybe it was because i hadn't cleaned out my intercooler from the last oil spill inside my engine due to the previous turbos dying. Cleaned them out etc. Car still isn't working right. Tons of oil on my spark plugs, like before. Replace them, start the car up today take it to the gas station and "boom headshot!" the oils just a brimming again.

Got my pfc etc in the car now so I can see what the hell else is going on inside my engine and hoping that I can find some kind of info on what could cause my turbos to do that. Something in the car to make them smoke like that then die? If it was with the car, what could of caused it? Any kind of info or what not would be appreciated as i'm at my wits end here.

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

I don't know for sure what turbo you are talking about because you did not say I assume twins. From what I have heard and seen rebuilt twins always smoke badly. Maybe its time to consider a new set or a real turbo.

yep, twins.

As far as a "real" turbo goes, i'll go to that as soon as I can get the car functioning under quasi stock form first.

Once that's happened, THEN i'll go to a nice single.

best way to figure out whats goin on and trace the oil source.. is to inspect the turbos..

Well if you dont want to fool with the single turbo you might still be due for a better set of twins that has not been rebuilt yet.

Ohhh its not that I don't wanna fool with a single, I do (and probably not as much crap to deal with either) But i'm just wanting to get the feeling of twins first before bumping myself up a notch. Know what I mean?

Havent seen any factory turbos rebuilt that last more than a few thousand ks . Find some good 2nd hand ones . Check for end play . If the shaft moves for-aft much the thrust bearing , front and rear oil seals are probably worn. Check turbine wheel for oil , and compressor housing outlet .

Over boosting can reduce life of turbos. As the wheel spins faster and draws more air in the wheel trys to suck out the inlet on compressor putting more load on thrust bearing and oil seals .

By switching to a single turbo setup without porting engine there will be no real hp gains , just loss of down low response.

To your last part there yeah that part im familiar with. Im going to take my car down at the end of summer and have it ported. I was going to do it this spring but i'd realy realy like to have it work first before moving on to the next stage so I can at least tell the difference.

Ive got a set off a 98 if your interested I bought them cause i thought mine were bad, come to find out it was my charge control valve. you can have them for near to nothing I havent used them, there seems to be the right amount of play in the shafts in and out an side to side, no cracks in the manifold. message me if your interested. i would inspect you oil lines going to the turbos too
