I am also in the market for a third gen RX-7 but am worried about the reliability of the engine. I have started to read the 3rd gen FAQs on this site and it seems that there are a few steps to take to improve reliablity.



I'm just wondering if I should expect to have to rebuild the motor at some time even if care is taken and the car not abused (overly)

 

I would expect the unexpected. It is very possible that you will have to rebuild even if the car was well taken care of. That would be due to coolant seals. I don't think your going to have to worry about breaking an apex seal unless you mod it and don't get it done and tunned properly.



My car lost it's coolant seals at 60k . I did researcha nd found over 30 people with the exact same experience as me.

It's a 10 year old car and you should expect that even ones kept up with will have old worn parts.



Most of us have been constantly working at making it a better car. Reliability mods are a must, and alot of reading is a good place to start.



You should really read thru this site if you haven't already. It even has a used car buyer guide..

If you're impatient, not very knowledgable or unwilling to learn enough to become very knowledgable of the car... just want to go fast with least hassle and best reliability... I would probably say get a hard top supra w/6 speed... just watch out for valve seals, alot of them need those replaced about now.



But if you are looking for something unique, fast, interesting, smooth, agile, lightweight, and very sexy... get the 3rd gen... but you won't be able to just start blindly modding things and enjoy the increased power without problems like many do with the supras.

I understand what you are saying. I think I just need to do a little more research and educate myself before coming to a decision. I have also been looking at Supras (stretching my budget a little too much) as well as mr2s and even a few miatas.
