FD THREE S 08-24-2003 08:11 AM

Hey guys got several questions regarding a New Motor i planning

on getting soon.

well i am 98% sure that my FD has a blown motor.

SO I been doing research and calling around regarding

getting a new motor and getting it Streetported.

One Shop i called (won't name names) asked what I plan

on doing with the car, so I stated that basically its gonna

be a street car and to the Drag strip here and there.

So he said for my application, that street port wasn't neccessary.

and that it is possible to make FD3S's run 11's, 12's on

non ported motor. So I am kinda on the fence on getting

a port job or not.. He said it makes a lil more high end

power, but sacrifice lower end and iddle...

So the question is.. TO STREETPORT or NOT TO streeport??

Also.. The place I called quoated me 4100 for New reman motor

and labor with NO port job, BUT 4900 for the same, and to PORT

the motor.. I thought porting was a simple job and etc. Is 800

for a port job fair?? to much? or what??? is it worth it???

Next question: When I get a new motor, make my turbos NON

Sequential??? This is so ironic.. the person I spoke with was

the biggest TOUTER of NON sequential.. But the shop he works

for is a NON Believer of non sequential...So he was like.. WELL

this and that... so it makes me wonder.. GO NON Sequential

or NOT???

TO give you guys some input on my CARs MODS..

I'll list my mods:

93 R1 with 135K Orignial miles with BLown motor and turbos

HKS intake

HKS TwinPak ignition

Greddy Pulley Kit

M2 Downpipe

SR Midpipe

HKS SuperDragger CB

APEX PFC w/commander

Removed Airpump

Vacuum Hose

MR street/track clutch

mazdaspeed shortshift

Autormeter boost gauge

Autometer A/F gauge

Fan switch mod

99spec tail lights

Racing beat wing

19" rims

and and other stuf I cant think of..

$800 seems too much for a port. Shop around, many of the guys on this forum will know the right price and people...In australia we are usually looking at AUS$400 tops for intake and exhaust porting (but much cheaper for me as I do all my own!)

I would get some form of porting done while the motor is apart- may as well! You don't have to go crazy- just a small port will mean reasonable gains at the end of the day. Make sure you get it done by someone who knows what they're doing- you'll need intake and exhaust porting done to get the most benefit, although the FD ports are large from the factory.

If your turbos are shot, go single turbo- it'll probably cost less than or close to getting your twins rebuilt or replaced and much more potential power to be made with the right size turbo.

Now let's see what everyone else thinks... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

If it is for the street I would not port the engine. My engine is ported right now and i think when it goes out I will trade it for a non-ported engine. You lose gas mileage, idel is crap, and in my opinion you lose low end power. I stay under the rpm range that ported motors are made for so I guess it was pointless for my car to be ported.

Also $800 for a porting job? WHoa! Every place I have seen charges $300.

**** that...street port it. Go non-sequential. Get a FMIC. Tune it. You'll be WAY happy.

Whoever buys an FD for gas mileage? Any mods will make that go down. I'm to the point of getting about 13 miles to the gallon. You know what...who ******* cares. I beat the piss out of my engine day in, day out...and love it. You lose low end torque, gain top end HP. My idle is great at 900 rpms...just requires more finessing of the power FC to do this.

My Cousin says the same thing...But It is my daily driver and here gas is going for $1.80 and still going up. Theirs other ways I can achieve the same amount of power without porting it and save mileage. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Sean, get the street port. Hands down.

Send me a PM and i'll let you get a ride in mine.

PFS might not like non sequential only becuase they don't make money from making guys cars non sequential. If you want a T78 then they are the place to go.

If you want non sequential, give me a call. It is much better IMO over the stock sequentail.

I would pay them for the engine and port work. Its well worth it. My ports are identiacal to their templates. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

I run 15 PSI and the car HAULS ASS!

ask Rikki, he tunned it.

tune is so you get better gas mileage. It's not the port that gets you bad gas mileage, but the tuning. If I didn't have such a lead foot, I'd get WAY better gas mileage :P

I pay almost 5 dollars a gallon! And I am going BP https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

If I want good gas mileage i'll drive a civic! The faster you go the more money you spend. OH WELL https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/BURNOUT.gif

Srce 08-24-2003 11:51 PM

I'm sort of fucked when it comes to porting. We have to pass emissions here so is there a sized port that will still allow me to pass emissions while giving some reasonable power over stock ports?

toddp31 08-24-2003 11:58 PM

The kind the has $$$$$ hooked up to it! With Franklins it will pass
