Squealing/Whining from tranny/gearbox?

Hi all,
My gearbox has started making a loud whining/squealing noise whenever the clutch is engaged - in all gears or in neutral.
Disengage the clutch (ie pedal down) and the noise goes away.
Any ideas as to the most likely cause? I'm guessing it's the main drive bearing in the tranny but would like other input.
