Recently obtained a 79 with a 15,000 mile streetported 12A. Stock carb, Monza header, air-pump removed (yoohoo belt installed).

Car has some driveability issues that I'm working on (won't idle below 2500 when cold, just doesn't like to drive below 3k period, doesn't like to rev too high, blah blah blah).

Current main concern- at high RPM (over 4800 at WOT or over 5500 on lesser loads) a light squealing or harsh whistling sound starts (volume increases with RPM). I'm having a hard time locating the source of the noise, as it barely does it with no loading (so I can't hear it over ambient noise when opening throttle by hand).

At first I thought maybe it was an accessory, but it is definately affected by the loading of the engine.

Any thoughts?

I had the same thing when i put the fourth motor in my sa22c. Found out after a liitle driving( and a water pump in about five pieces) that the bearing had gone out in the waterpump. And trust me a destroyed water pump breaks all sorts of other things too... like the eye bolts that hold the housing, and the housing itself...

Could be an air leak in the intake manifold. Try tighting the intake manifold bolts/nuts and see if the sound goes away.

Does it have AC or power steering? It might need a double belt pulley for your alternator.I know mine needs one. When my truck is cold and not fully warmed up it squeals.

This may help you..on 1st model rx7s ...there is a choke line attached to the carb that can EASILY fall off it's rocker. Remove the air filter element on top of the engine and there SHOULD be a small "pivot" point that a cable for the throttle should set on..and if pushed the wrong way it can fall off..then the car will have "lost power" it will accelerate but not have any power at all.. Put this cord with a little metal peice on it back on it's pivot point and the car should take off. This will solve high end power but not sure about the idle problem. Sometimes solving one problem will solve another. Hope this helps.

How about an exhaust leak? Does the car still have a cat on it?
