Another update. The dealer says now they are not sure if needs another turbo but will cost me $750 for them to take it further apart and find out. Then if I need one they can only do a new one for $4500. Meanwhile I found a good rx7 specialist shop recommended by a friend. They say the turbo is probably alright and just needs to have the corrosion cleaned off. If it does need a turbo they can locate a used one for me and install it for around $2500. My friend says they did one for him and rejected two of them before installing the third one which they thought was in the best condition. Unfortunately if I want the aftermarket single turbo, they don't do them. Say that sometimes they don't work right and it takes too much fooling around with them. They don't feel confident. I hope I don't need a turbo of course. The car only has 41K on it.

So If it turns out I need a new turbo, what do you guys think of going to an aftermarket Single Turbo system? I've heard they can add life to your engine and are far less complicated.

I know they are expensive to do. I've been quoted 5K to install one. Of course you lose your low end torque but high end should be improved.

???

if you want a streetable single turbo http://www.xs-engineering.com has a T04E kit, you would need that, pfc, fmic, fuel pump etc. to make it all work though. on a more positive note your car will be faster and more reliable

Hey man, if you need some rebuilt twins check with Bryan at www.BNRsupercars.com he is a very good friend of mine and if you have a rebuildable core its around $750 for the SET with a one year warranty WAAYYYY less than Mazduh and pretty much anyone else.

If you want to go single he can hook you up there as well. He can build any kind of turbo. He used to be the main turbo builder for Turbo Specialties.

If you want to email me its SJWhite2000@aol.com

Later and Good Luck,

STEPHEN

i ****** hate the dealers...

if all it is is calsification on the hose nipples..they can use a .02$ piece of sand papaper clean it off..and replace the turbo coolant lines wich go bad all the time...i mean its a job that if you did it your self should cost abt 50bux max( getting lines from dealer)

as far as your turbos needing replacing..complete bs..

ok they would need replacing if the cartride had a crack and was spewing coolant from inside the turbo, but by the sound of it its completly external..a bit of rust on the outside of the ex housing wont hurt anything...

your in calli theres alot of good shops out there, i mean calli is a huge state so their not exactly a stone throw somtimes, but anythings better then a a mazduh dealer mechanics..

their solutiion to anything is just replace the whole unit..

ohh your tubo has corroded coolant nipples....hell instead of removing the buildup lets replace a perfectly good set of turbos....

incase you cant tell i hate the dealer

also i dont kno how far you are from the bay area but ive heard good things abt

Bacon is completely right. If you take your car to a dealership anything that leaks a little they replace. All the dealership is going to do is screw you out of your money. I work at dealership and know that some places sell the part because the more they do teh more they get paid. I would definately goes elsewhere for a second opinion and work. Good luck!

After my experience with 2 dealers, I have to agree 100% with Bacon and Dowd. Thanks for the advice guys! I have a pretty good shop now I'm working with in Sacramento. Latest news is that the turbo is fine and there is a metal pipe that is leaking. My shop is installing a used pipe that is in good condition and is going thru the whole turbo set up replace hoses and whatnot. These guys are honest at least and didn't think I needed to replace the turbo (unless they find another leak in the actual turbo housing). So looks like I'll be on the road soon. If it comes down to turbo replacement, I've pretty much decided on converting to a better aftermarket system but will cross that bridge . . . etc.

Appreciate all the tips on used turbos but looks like I won't need to go that route. Yeah those dealers are really something aren't they? What a weenie I was in the first place to even think they'd help me out. :dontgetit:
