whats the big difference in the new rx-8 engine having a side port....i read a article once but i forgot....can someone refresh my memory

the exhaust on every other rotary engine are peripheral ports.



all the ports on a renesis engine are on the sides including the exhaust ports

Reduces or eliminates overlap, which greatly reduces emissions. Its not as optimal for turbocharging though.

Silver Ninety Three, reducing overlap should be better for turbo applications, shouldn't it? Is there something else that makes side ports worse for turbo?

I was asking this because, i picked up the new turbo magazine and it has the auto select fd and in the article it says they made their own mild side port....maybe i'm just forgeting something about the 13brew

sideport = streetport



they are just porting the "side" ports (intake) and arent talking about the exhaust really...

in addition to reduced overlap they get better closure/sealing, and better flow(rotor) sweeps out the exhaust and not at right angles.
