Im sure this is a repost, so i appoligize in advance.
What short throw shifter do you use and what percent did it shorten the stock throw? |
B&M, alot
gotham racing... just as much as b and m.... about 50% reduction.
also they are the same as the 50 dollar ones on ebay |
gatham racing... not sure on differance in stock throw
gotham racing in my car as well.
I have a Mazdaspeed short shifter. The shifter wasn't short enough for my taste so I hacked an extra 2" off the top. I like it better since my re-design. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png

B&M
30% reduction in throw Built VERY solid Highly recommend |
where do i buy a gotham racing shifter? it shortens about 50% eh?

Indeed a quality piece. Also, I cut the top 1" off, making an even shorter throw, with a great feel, I'd say from neutral to any gear is about a 1 inch move https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif |
b&m or c's all the way
ok, from the sounds of it b&m is the way to go. 1st off, wheres the cheapest place to buy one https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png? and how do i go about cutting them? die grinder and a wire feed? Also, to those of you who have hacked yours, did you keep the stock shift boot?
no one?
I had the B&M for awhile but got rid of it and went back to stock. Stock to me feels better.
gotham is nice and cheap
dont know the throw percentage tho its alot better than stock |

I cut mine down with a hack saw and then just ran a die over it to run the threads down further. I didn't see any reason not to keep the stock boot. I even bothered to snap these pictures off for ye. |
I have the C's Short throw shifter. It shortened the throw by 30% or so, and made the engagement very positive. Also, I'm not sure what the large base of the B&M Style shifters is about, but my C's exactly resembles the stock shifter. It's very beefy but not too heavy, I don't think it's physically that much shorter, but the throw sure is. I think the advantage of the C's style is shorter throw and improved feel. Anyway, C's went bust, so that brand isn't avail anymore.
i have a C's shifter also. i like alot very crisp and smooth. i didnt know they went "bust" as you say but it is a very nice shifter.
i still use a modified stock shifter in my track car.
I still have my C's from Jason's final GB, in a box, never used obviously.

I don't understand this. You are not change the wieght's height or center of gravity, nor exchanging a longer base for a shoter shaft. I think you just have a shorter shaft. This may be more comfortable but I don't see how it shortens the pendulum swing of the shifter. |

You need to re-read my original post.. MY SHIFTER IS A MAZDASPEED, not stock shifter. I cut down my mazdaspeed short shifter. Try to read the entire thread before you start replying to one particular post. |
Think of the shifter as a triangle - Position 1 (side A), Position 2 (side B) and a straight line between the two positions at the top of the shifter (side C)
So, if you leave the angle AB the same, and shorten side A and B.. Side C is automatically shorter. The triangle would be similar, but smaller by whatever percentage you cut off. |

I took about an extra 2" off the top then re-threaded what was left. |
think of it like a door. if you swing the outside of the door from full open, 90 deg. for the sake of this explanation, to full close you will displace the far edge of the door probably about 3 feet depending on the size of the door. if you cut all of the door off but about 1 inch on the hinged edge you will acheive a 90 deg full open by displacing the door about 3 inches. make sense?
you mean 90 degrees? im talking about a door in a house or something, like one thats restricted to a 90 degree swing by a wall or some other object
damn, theres alot more math than i was thinking...

dumbassness, good word choice, I like it! lol
How many of you get the rattling noise that the Mazdatrix website reports? That's one of my main fears for getting a short shifter...they say if you go short, theres like a 1 in 12 risk it'll start rattling, and even if you go back to stock, it'll still rattle.
Mine never rattled.
I am using th RE Amemiya unit. The throw is definitely shorter, not sure about the percentage, but not that much less than stock. The shifting is very smooth, smoother than the stock one which was there already. No rattles.
