haven't looked thru the fsm yet, just wondering about draining the refrigerant. i think i'm just gonna roll the car out to the alley to vent the stuff, then roll it back into the garage to take everything out. just wondering what a good spot to disconnect a line to vent from would be.

Hey there is 2 lines right next to your intake pipes and anti lock brake system. You should see 2 black caps on the lines. Do you know if your car has R-12 or

R-134A refrigerant in it?? I am a licensed refrigeration mechanic. let me know if you hvae more questions. I am pretty sure you might know but it is illeagal to purge R-12 into the atmosphere. It is suppose to be recovered by a licesed professional. R-134 is ok though. One is has CFC's and 134 has hcfc's. CFC's deplete the ozone. If you have any question definatly contact me.

**** THE EPA !!! Like our cars are helping the ozone anyway! If you have the old R12 system, under the black caps are valves just like on rims. You can unscrew the valve from the line and it will come out. Or just find the easiest line and loosen it up untill it all comes out, don't discnnect completly at first, it will shoot gas and oil out like a fire hose and make a big mess, just open enough to let it leak out.

When you put the car back together you should get an R-134 retrofit kit from somewhere like autozone. comes with everthing you need including freon for about $30

CARFUL!! If you don’t bother to capture it, just make sure that you sufficiently cool down the car before releasing the R12. My thermo professor told me that releasing R12 and heating it rapidly “ like on the turbo manifold for instance” produces deadly mustard gas.

I don’t think that is a good idea to vent the R12, if nothing else just capture it and reuse it.

It has better cooling properties than the 134a anyway.

I just read from a A/C page that smoking while doing the release could also easily cause this to happen! So be very careful if you do decide to vent it
