Oil pedistal failure
#1
Right now my car is at my friends shop, waiting for me to finish working on it. Here is what happened on Sunday.....Thanks to the "hidden element" oil filter pedistal from the group buy.
I was leaving my friends shop after changing the spark plugs, when I came to a light about 1/4 mile down the road. I looked down at my oil pressure and it read ZERO, since there was no shoulder I couldn't pull over. I saw a bit of smoke coming from under the hood at this time. As quickly as I could I drove another 1/4 mile before I had a shoulder I could pull off on. As soon as I pulled over I turned the car off and popped the hood. Since the smoke was coming from the turbo side of the engine bay I looked there first and couldn't find anything but a lot of oil and smoke. Next I looked to the drivers side of the engine bay, what I saw I hope to never see again. The entire driver side of the engine bay was covered in oil and puddles of it. After a bit of searching I found the oil filter was out of place, so I touched it and it came off by the same place it did last time. This should have never happened. I installed this product correctly and did not over tighten the filter itself. When I was attempting to remove the pedistal base the hole the banjo bolt threads into started turning with the bolt and started to kink the oil return line from the oil coolers.
I pulled the oil drain plug and NOTHING came out. Luckily I wasn't running the car long so I don't think any engine damage happened. If there is engine damage or damage to the turbo I'm not too sure what I'll do, or what I can do.
According to the machinist that made this product: I must have installed the oil filter wrong, or knocked the center post when I was installing the temp sensor (note how far away from the center post the sensor is). I didn't realize you could install an oil filter wrong, and if tightening the oil filter compromises the pedistal then the deisgn is flawed right there.
Here is a picture of the end result of the pedistal.
I have spent over 5 hours towing my car back to the shop and cleaning it so far, and I'm still not done.

apparently I'm the only person to experiance this problem with the pedistal thus far. I know for sure I'm not gonna install another one. The blame is still be placed on me for improper installation

I don't trust those things for ****. I had a greddy one that was for the oil pressure gauge. I never could get it to seal properly so it came off the car with no delay. I hope your engine and turbo are ok Dan.

I started the car lastnight with the original pedistal in place, seems to run okay....I thought I could hear one rotor face clapping a bit, but it could just be my ears deceiving me. I don't think the engine was damaged, but I think someone should have to pay for the five hours labor time it took to clean all the oil up. There is STILL oil in the engine bay, I couldn't get everywhere. What really sucks is the oil got into the bell housing so I have to put it back up on the lift and spray some carb cleaner in there to get it all out. Oil also got onto the DP wrap so that'll be smoking for a while as well. Maybe I just got a bad piece. I'm going to be sending it back so the machinist who made it can "inspect" it.

thats the original sale thread. I'm shipping the pedistal out tomorrow so I'll post an update when they come back with the cause of the failure.

looks as if where the filter screws in is "pressed" in. no glue or anything. maybe it shouldve been threaded and glued like the piece for the banjo bolt.
it also could be pressed from underneath. i guess.
maybe if you over tighten the oil filter it was pulled a bit?
hope your car is ok.
