Max Length Of The Temp Sender?
Hi,
since we all know that the stock temp gauge is pretty much useless, i would like to install an aftermarked one.
for that ,i need a new temp sender.
i have both, but i'm not sure, whether my temp sender is too long or not, since i want to screw it in the stock location, into the rotor housing.
it's approx. 24 mm long, including copper washer (see attached artwork).
should i shorten it?
best regards,
Chris

Nothin wrong with the stock sender, it is just that the gauge is not linear, there is a fix for that too, but you would have to search for that. What ecu do you have now? Casue if the ecu does not read a temperature from the coolant the temp correction factors in the computer will be stuck in one place probably making you run pretty lean at startup. Most people that instal an aftermarket temp gauge just tap the coolant filler neck, cause the ecu needs to know the engines temp.
Hi rdavidsrx7,
afaik the stock sender is not compatible with my VDO gauge, that's why i got a matching sender.
you are right with the ecu-thing, but keep in mind that the ecu gets its information from the sensor in the thermostat-housing. the sender for the stock gauge in the rear rotor-housind is really for the gauge only.
i don't want to linearize, since i want to see concrete numbers.
i also don't want to tap into the tstat-housing, because
a) it's more work than just screwing a new sender into the stock location
b) i won't see any temperature if the thermostat stucks close
thanks, Chris

the evil forum DOES have some merit to it after all, lol
EDIT: sounds like the t-stat housing is the best place, but you def still need the sensor to the ECU

david, no stress
no, i don't mean the sensor. if i remember correctly, there is the coolant sensor for the ecu behind the thermostat-housing. under that coolant sensor is the temp switch for the fans. on the front of the tstat housing is the low coolant-sensor.
and the sensor for the temp gauge is in the rear rotor housing.

tahnks for your response, but there is nothing written about the replacement of the stock sender. or am i reading sloppy?
