i'm planning on buying a 3rd gen and need some advice on what to look for and what to stay away from, i live in ohio and i'm good friends with people from the local shops. but they dont have enough experiance wrking with or on them, and was wondering if there are any reputable shops in ohio that could do the diffrent engine wrk ie balancing, porting, seals etc. so i was wondering about the reliabilty mods, and if it's a pain in the *** to keep these engines happy. i know what i'm wanting out of it, i know what front rear and side skirts i'll get and i want atleast 500rwhp. and i keep hearing all these horror stories about these motors not being worth a damn and blowing all the time and was wondering if you guys could set me straight on fact and fiction about them. besides that anything else you think i should know would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Jon

Well Jon, First off forget 500hp for a while. You have alot of learning to do beforr you get into that.

I would also suggest that you leave the body kits alone for a while.

Pics are fun to stare at but leave it at that. The 3rd gen is a great car probabely the best you could own. At least the one you will love the most anyway.

With that being said, Fd's (3rd gens) can be tempermental cars when not properly cared for. And sometimes for no seemingly obvious reason at all.

It all boils down to you and the way you maintain your car.

Keep up with the car and don't be stupid and do mods to a car that you know knothing about and you won't have any major problems. Of coarse you should expect that coolant seals go out in a 13b-rew generally around 60-75k miles no matter how well the car was mantained. The original seals are getting old and brittle and will break. Some exceed this but it is certainly not the norm.

Also if you do moddifications with out the proper tunning you will blow your engines apex seals.

It doesn't take much more than one time on the throttle in lean conditions and BOOOM!

Relaibility mods..

Hmmmm Well the coolant system is a good place to start.. AST/Radiator hoses/Down Pipe

Then gen maintance stuff, new plugs(NGK 9's)/Fuel filter/Regular oil changes

Of coarse a vacum hose replacement is high on the list because like I said the stock vacum hoses will be breaking and blowing off. Especially if you are modding. IMO this is the first hting you should do.

You can run in a few directions from there. But most importantly you need to do your research. You first post tells us that you really don't have a clue about these cars. I will tell you that the General discussion and Interior /exterior areas is not the place to do your resaerch either.

Here are some really good links that have been a big help to all of us at one point or another..

You can actually download a workshop manual for your car for free fomr this site..iluvmyrx7.com

This one has tons of great info, including the info on buying a Rx7 that you asked for..Robinettes site

This one is my favorite has lots of how-to tips and" Big List " style responses.

thanks for the info, and sorry about placing the questions in the wrong place. yeah i'm kinda retarded when it comes to mazda rotary engines, i have three cars now that are heavily moddified but i've wanted and thought about getting a rx7 for about three years but have never relly looked into them or really read up on them. i've heard there nasty when tuned right and the right mods done and then again i've heard i'll waste more money than i'd want to tryng to keep it running. but on the bodykits and hp expectations thats what i'm shooting for if i decide to go with a 3rd gen and i'll have enough money to do it.

but thanks again for the help
