So from what I hear, the FD and 1G Miata share the same transmission. How closely are the two related?

they don't share the same transmission at all.

the 1G miata was built from the ground up to be a miata.

the FD was built from the ground up to be an FD.

relation = sporty mazda cars that rock.

If what I've read is correct, the Rx8 has the 5 speed Miata tranny, but with an added 6th gear. And this may be causing them problems, some Rx8 owners are having trans problems already.

The FD tranny was designed from a previous Rx generation 4 speed MT. Many attribute the problems we have with the 5th/R hub to that cost cutting update.

Apparently Mazda hasn't learned that adding another gear to an older gearbox doesn't solve problems well.

the miata and the fd dont really share much except basic stuff like the ppf and suspension layouts

for the record mazda has, 4 rwd trannsmissions

the R type. introduced for 1970 in the rx2 as a 4 speed it has seen many updates, 5th gear was added in the early 70's, the unit was beefed up for the turbo2; and then given dual cone synchros for the fd. this transmission is also used in trucks, and the 5speed rx8

the M type: this tranny was introduced in the rx7 in 78 as a 5speed. its seen several uptates and continues to be used in the miata as a 5speed. it was also used in the b2000/b2200 trucks

the Y type: this is the 6 speed; IT SHARES NO PARTS WITH ANY OTHER MAZDA TRANNY. it was designed as a 6speed and its debut was 99 in the miata. its also used in the rx8

P type: this is the truck tranny mazda builds for ford, in the b3000/4000/ranger trucks. its kind of loosely based on the r type
