just not sure what needs to be replaced and what doesnt. i really appreciate any help and your ideas. it starts right up but had probs so read carefully.

This car had 30,000 miles and ran perfect when i got it a couple months back but i hauled it 750 miles with dolley and rear wheels on the road turnin the whole way driveshaft was connected. when i got it home it didnt run right, the rear end was leaking on the rear section of the exhaust cuz the rear end gasket cracked. not sure if the rear end is good or not and dont know when this happened could have been early in the trip but my auto tranny was in neutral and its fluid smells badly burnt. putting it in drives it revs like in neutral. also when i got it home there was a few drips on the bottom the oil pan, it started to leak out maybe from being at an angle when i was hauling it but i checked it and it wasnt low and i checked the oil since and hasnt leaked, smells fine, and looks fine, like a brand new oil change.

also the car idles at about 3000 after i start it and smokes bad. its noisy too. i have the rear end fluid completely drained but i started it today and had these symtoms. id say it smokes cuz the fluid on the back of the exhaust, not sure, but if anyones experienced that let me know.

your rear end is burnt up. towing like that with no fluid is just like driving it with no fluid.

oh and for some reason they say not to tow it like that, im not sure why but tell us whats wrong when you find all of the problems and we will know.

oh and i think its bad for autos to do that, dont know what it hurts but my dad disconnected the ds on our chevelle before towing it about 50 miles, i know its a different car, but same principle. this will give you a good reason to put a manual in there though.

^I've only owned one auto in all my life, and never needed to tow it, but I've always been under the impression that you can't tow an auto with the drive wheels on the ground.

You even mentioned having the driveshaft connected, so you must have been thinking about the issue.

i called dad and he says that if you keep the ds in it heats up the end of the transmission, and is not cooled bc there is no fluid being circulated. this heats up the rest of the transmission and fluid which causes damage. you prob need a new tranny

yup... it turns the rear portion of the transmission with the DS connected.. but the oil pump/circulation bits aren't being turned. You might wanna drop the belly pan on the tranny and see if THAT is what is damaged.

thanks guys for the help, i drained the rear end after i hauled it. i wasnt that dumb to haul it like that. i have a tranny already but i will check it out. the tranny fluid smells burnt so id say its gone. im just making sure what all can go wrong in this situation so i get everything fixed by spring. since this happened i found out about disconnection the driveshaft but didnt think of that when i first got the car. thought hauling it in neutral was safe but now i know. there wasnt any way to get it home cuz uhaul was out of everything except one dolley and that was the 3rd uhaul place i went to. well thanks guys. ive got just about everything for the manual swap
