I never understand why guys plan on tossing the stock turbo before they even get the friggin car.

You don't even know if you like the twins yet and you want a single.

Jumping the gun a bit dont you think?

Also you should set your sights a little lower unless you have **** load of cash to drop.

Your post should be more like........

I am soon buying a 3rd gen.

Where can I get a workshop manual?

Also I want to get a few mods done to get me started,

I want to get your opinions about what I plan on doing.

I am gonna do a vacum hose job, install a down pipe, boost guage, and a cat back.

When I get that all done I am gonna take it to the track and see what happens.

Thanks for any advice,

But do whatever floats your boat.

It's your car that is gonna be fucked from inexperience.

I hope that you get it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Well, I hate to say it but this is a very true post. I can understand the frustration one experiences when a new FD owner has everything picked out before he/she gets the car... Because MOST OF THE TIME, they get the car, crank the boost and either Pop the ******* motor, or total the car.

I did everything in order from recalls and Reliability, to ECU and power... But that's me.

I do know that having a heavily modded FD even on the twins (sequential still) is a dream come true. There are very few cars that are streetable that can handle a FD3S. And NONE have the looks.

Just make sure you LEARN the cars characteristics before you go ****** around. Make sure the car is in PERFECT mechanical order before you go trying to run your friends BPU Supra.

If your car acts goofy, GET IT FIXED> BY A REPUTABLE TUNER> NOT PEP BOYS. I suggest you see if you can hang out and learn something.

Chances are, if you buy a stock FD... You are gunna need to fix something.

Best of luck with the purchase. But in all honesty, stick to the basics. Do the reliability. REPLACE THE GODDAMN CLUNKY BUSHINGS. UPGRADE THE BRAKES. And drive safe!

ok well that's fucked I had a long post in reply to all the things said. Regardless I'll shorten it and repost.

Basically I want to say thanks to all of you including fd3boost, teknics, and 9base3. I know you guys know your stuff about fd's and I appreciate what you're trying to say. Like I said I've had time under the hood of my buddies FD. I'm sure no where near the time you guys have but I've driven his a fair amount too. He has the stock twins on his modded fd, and yeah you're right they are very nice, but I want something different. There are a few modded fd's around here but they're all either stock or the mods they have never really involve the turbos, so I want something different plus I have the money for it since I've been saving for about 5 years now in hopes of getting a project to dump my money into. I didn't decide on an FD until about a year ago. As for the reliability mods I figured that was a given that I didn't need to even state that but my bad of course those were what I planned on doing first, and as for the shop manual I've had that for about a year now since downloading while working on my buddies FD.

I'm not taking any offense to what you guys had to say cause honestly if I were in your shoes I'd be thinking I was a dumbass too, and well if I **** something up then you have more than the right to rip me one.... hell at that point you might as well come to my house and beat the **** out of me for doing something wrong. I appreciate the input you guys have given me and like I said that's my plan for what I want to do. If I actually do it when I get the car is a whole other story.

oh yeah as for tuning and work I was leaning towards A-spec Tuning in IL since I only live a couple of hours away and they seem to be very reputable, plus that's probably where I'm going to get all my parts from.

Anyway Thanks again guys.

Where in IL are you located? There's a mess of us in Saint Louis... Right over the river... I work at Scott Air Force base... In O'Fallon IL. And as for the car...

You sound more well trained than most of the new owners that come to the boards with questions. The "other" forum does have a really good single turbo forum... There are very many reputable owners in there that know all the **** about single setups. There are a good bunch here too. Don't be afraid to ask questions... We'll help with whatever we can!

rx-7addict 01-16-2003 01:20 PM

thanks 9base3.... Actually I live in Elkhart, IN it's near South Bend like where Notre Dame is, but A-Spec is only like 2 hours from where I live, so it's easy for me. Yeah I'm still a noob in comparison to many of you guys, but I have put my time in under the hood of an fd in the last couple of years as well as some other cars like my buddie's 69 Trans Am, ::gulp:: a 96 mustang cobra, a couple of old beamers, and even some shitty honda's but everyone's gotta start somewhere I guess. I have no qualms about asking questions and I sure as hell have no problem admitting that I fucked up when I did, but hell once I get it up and running maybe I'll make the trip to St. Louis since I have a couple of friends that go to school at Wash U and then I can meet up with a couple of you guys as well.

9BASE3 01-16-2003 01:34 PM

Hell yeah! Let us know when you are in town. We party by Wash U all the time!

rx-7addict 01-16-2003 01:51 PM

No doubt man I'll definately let you know. It'll probably be a couple of months like I said I have yet to get the car and the parts. I'm aiming to buy the parts mid to late February and do the reliability mods and any other fixups then, and then work on the new parts. So I'm aiming to hopefully get it done somewhere in the time span of early April provided I have the time to really sit down and work on it. I'll be juggling working full time, school, and a girlfriend, so as you can imagine the free time isn't always there, but I'll keep you posted.

Well I wasnt trying to rip you so much as set you on the right path. Seems like you got yourself on it already.

I hope that you find a nice car. Good luck and keep us posted.

GWYGUY 01-16-2003 10:57 PM

9BASE3!!! How's it going, man? Where you work on Scott? I'm here, too. My baby's garagin' while this bullshit weather slides out. It'll gimmee some time to replace the rear bushings. Ain't nuthin' compares to an FD, and ain't nuthin' can spin heads like them either. Just out of curiosity, who does your tuning and hard parts work? I'm still looking for that special mechanic for the harder stuff. Mazda up in Fairview is a rapist, and they sound like they don't know what the hell's going on. Take it easy. G Out!

rx7_addict:

I was actually trying to protect what you were saying aboutwhat setup you wanted and i was telling them that you mentioned you worked on one before and have ridden/driven in one. Also I honestly don't believe i know half as much as anyone else here, the things i were suggesting were complete basics that i've been taught is the way to start from scratch, of course that doesnt apply to your build because you have worked and ridden/driven in one before. me i've only ridden in one once....never even touched a rotary engine yet.

kevin.

fd3boost:

Again thanks for the input; I knew you weren't rippin me one when you posted you just were tryin to help me out I guess I didn't state that I realized that ..... my bad. Basically I just wanted to put up a big post explaining all my plans and all so you guys could all see that I'd put a little more thought into it then I'd probably originally portrayed.

teknics:

Thanks for trying to back me up on what I said I didn't make it clear in my post that I realized that either.

I get distracted as hell at work right when I sit down to do something like this and then it screws my whole thought process. I'll keep you guys posted on how things are coming along. Right now I'm just trying to find a car that's in good condition and is not half a world away, but I'm getting to the point that if I have to spend like 250 bucks to fly out to look at one somewhere then I'll do it, it could save me a shitload of pains down the road. We'll see though. Anyway thanks again.
