I had to get my engine rebuilt so I kind of attacked the engine bay for a make over.

Here are some photos of the repaint part of this make over. I have several changes planned.

I was getting bored with it. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

Fd3BOOST 05-14-2006 09:17 PM

Thats about the response I expected. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blush.png

"yea great it's an engine bay alright" https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

j0rd4n 05-14-2006 10:42 PM

i'm actually impressed...was it hard to pull everything else other than the motor?

GreyGT-C 05-14-2006 10:52 PM

your engine bay blows.... i mean your engine bay is blue. So what are the changes that you have in mind?? I was expecting a color change or something.

iceblue 05-15-2006 12:23 AM

Why the **** are your front aprons cut out?

Fd3BOOST 05-15-2006 05:20 PM

No pulling everything off is the easy part.

Other changes are a new 19 row mocal oil cooler and lines, removed the A/C altogether. I relocated the fan relays and am in the process of relocating the main fuse panels and lines to the rear bin like Scrub already did. I completely removed the remaing ABS componets that were left such as the hard lines ,the stock proportion valve and the ABS sensors. This also includes replacing everything from the caliper to the master cylinder with braided stainless lines. Which will make a really clean streamline brake system. Replaced the plastic coolant overflow tank. Replaced the oil catch "red stripe" bottle that I sported for so long. Swapping from the .85 turbine housing to the smaller .73 on my T67 to get it to spool up faster. I got a new Unorthodox main crank pulley going in on the new motor. I replaced and relocated my BOV from the elbow further down onto the charge pipe. Having it on the elbow made changing plugs and adjusting the idle a real pain.

Thats about the sum of it. There might be one or two other smaller things lined up but until I get to that bridge I don't know exactly what I will do.

WTF is a front apron on a car? If your talking about the plastic wheel well liners they came out for the paint and are going back on when I get to them.

Rob x-7 05-15-2006 08:30 PM

Looks good, im sure it was a pain in the ass, hope it all came out alright when the first coat of color went on, sometimes its like WHOOAAA LOOK AT THE FISHEYES! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

Cheers! 05-15-2006 11:36 PM

what happened to the engine? Didn't you just recently build it yourself. 2 years ago?

Nice engine bay. Paint it flat black. No fish eyes on flat black paint.

Rob x-7 05-16-2006 05:59 AM

you can get fish eyes with flat black

Fd3BOOST 05-16-2006 09:19 AM

I know exactly what you mean Rob. I had bad fish eyes on the underside of my hood when I did it.I was real carefull this time to clean it off to steer clear of some contamination. There were a couple of small boogers cause I used some older clear but I just rubbed them out.

The motor was broke because I had a problem with my coil harness and and it was my fault.

89 Rag 05-16-2006 09:37 AM

yep, it's stripped down to bare, can't wait to see it done!

lookin good bud

iceblue 05-17-2006 08:04 AM

Maybe I am blind, but if I look at your pics there is a big whole in your engine bay on the side in front of the strut towers and before the core support "known as front apron". It looks like thy are gone and thus would require drilling out the spot welds.

I don’t mean to be a party pooper but SS lines stretch not as much as rubber but still expand under high pressure and running these for all your brakes will give a mushy brake pedal.

GreyGT-C 05-17-2006 10:50 AM

yeah.... that big hole is where the plastic wheel well liner normally is.

You will not feel a mushy pedal using SS lines thru-out the car either... unless you use the CHEAP **** like Russell's lines. If you used Aeroquip lines and fittings... it'll be fine.

One320B 05-17-2006 11:53 AM

That looks like IBM! Lol, we can have the IBM engine bay thing going on.. I just had my engine bay done up not too long ago for the FC.. FD engines bays look so much different when they are stripped clear!

Looks good though, when is the motor going back in?

Yea I know. This Ice Blue guy needs to lay off the crack pipe. front aprons my ass. They are called wheel well liners donkey and they pop in and pop out with a few screws and rivets. They are solid metal on second gens only. On third gens they are plastic and removable. You are not blind just clueless.

Your all wrong on the brake lines too.

It's been a pain trying to source a good set of used irons. It will cost me close to $600 to have mine lapped down and re-nitride coated. Once I get a decent set of irons to work with I should be able to wrap it up within two weeks.

One320B 05-17-2006 03:13 PM

Sweet.... We'll have to meet up sometime as I'm in NOVA. Once the exterior paint is done on my FC, it'd be nice to have a side-by-side shot of the IBM FC & FD...

Oh that is cool. So you are having your 2nd gen painted blue mica. I'd like to get a look at that.

I'll have to let you know next time we do a HOOTERS meet. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

One320B 05-17-2006 04:39 PM

Yea, my engine bay is already done, there are some threads floating around somewhere and you can see it in my garage pics. I've been sidetracked by my FB project, but I should have the exterior done before too long.

Coil problem? Do tell! I just finished playing around with all my ignition system's hardware... =(

You are scaring me.

btw beautiful job. You paitence must be endless

iceblue 05-18-2006 08:18 PM

Ahh someone ells spouting off there forum skills huu.

SSB lines will expand and flex way to much sorry but you both are wrong here and this is a retarded idea. A brake system should always be run with hard lines with SS swivel ends for the caliper to strut mount. All race cars are also ran this way. Why do you think that might be?

Oh my please forgive me about the wheel wells sorry I don’t spend all my time under the hood of an FD. I recall asking you a question about them not slamming you for removing them. However that is a front apron and where a front apron exists just so happens the FD has some of it cutout in the middle covered with the wheel well.

All this from people who don’t even know the proper names of the body panels. sigh.

Dave G. 05-18-2006 08:32 PM

SS braided lines do flex, where as SS hard lines would be the firmest that I have used. Regular hard line that you get at the local parts store is fairly easy to flair when you are making lines. But to do stainless hard line, you better have a pretty high quality flairing tool. I went through about 3 of them before using a Matco one, and fell in love. I don't think you will feel the flex though since I am guessing you used all -3 AN braided lines, and there isn't alot of room for flexing but I could be wrong. Whenever we are upgrading the brake system on a car completely, like on the Falken drift FD, we replaced ALL of the hard lines with SS hard lines, and of course the usual ss braided at the calipers. But Iceblue is correct with his statement about there being more flex than hard lines. Braided lines were made to protect the outside of the rubber hose that is inside it so it won't wear through like the rubber hose alone would. The upside to it is it looks really nice.

Here is a pic of a customers car we are finishing up. It has all the brake lines redone in SS hard line, and "hidden". We are also doing a wire tuck on it so when it is done, you will barely see any wires in the engine bay.

Congrats on the clean bay. The car is looking really nice.

Fd3BOOST 05-18-2006 10:21 PM

Well sorry to butt heads off though but your first question ice blue starts out with "Why the **** are your front aprons cut out?" You lost my attention right off the bat with a comment like that. First off if you don't as you say "spend time under the hood of a 3rd gen" then why bother posting in this forum in the first place? (Refer to the last guidline to posting in the pinned thread up top)

Considering that you attack me and you were ill informed to boot. You only come off looking like an idiot who has a big mouth and knows little if anything he is posting about. So maybe if you want someone to take you seriously then tone it down in this forum until you know a little bit about 3rd gens. Fair enough?

As far as flex in the line. I'll admit I don't know everything. I like to wrench and I learn as I go. About three years ago. I took out the ABS and made my own hardlines and added a brake balancer and line lock etc. I's been working out fine, but i want to try something new. I understand that the line could flex some. I have my doubts as to it being a safety concern. You can say what you want, but I have heard all kinds of stuff that is not supposed to work and yet I try it and it does. So if you guys want to beat me to the punch and if you find foryourselves that the pedal is like a limp noodle then please by all means let me know. Otherwise I will and I will be sure to let you know if it does work poorly. I have never shyed away from my ideas and if they don't work the way I want I am always the first to say so. It's very cheap and easy for me to make some new hard lines if I have to. Thanks for watching out for me.

Oh and thanks for the compliment on the paint. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png

Dave G. 05-19-2006 01:30 AM

Yeah I don't think for a second that it would render any type of safety concern for sure. That being said, I also haven't done it. It would be interesting to do a stopping distance test with hard line vs. ss braided. Please do post your findings for everyone. Are you doing any other type of brake upgrading or will they be the same with exception of the lines being different?

And keep us updated with pics!

Fd3BOOST 05-19-2006 09:24 AM

I just now see that you are one of the guys that took the second gen on the TV show pinks! I tivo pinks. That was a good one. You guys had some problems launching that thing. It bogged down the first two runs. It ran well the last one though.

What does it do in a quarter mile anyway? Which guy are you also? The big or skinny dude?

I will keep you posted and itla nice to talk to a winner on pinks! Congratulations on the win!

ahh but my stated reaply was "wtf are your aprons removed for?" Notice the ? mark at the end? Umm yup no one attacked you they simply asked you a ?.

Don't be an idiot, you came off like an ass. Again if you want to be better recieved then may I suggest next time trying something like "Hey why did you remove your aprons? " instead of "What the **** did you do that for?" It might work out better for you. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

Last summer I had a crane hi6 on the car and when I took it off I damaged the harness so when I repaired it and tapped it all up I had the index of the positions kind of off I guess and I plugged in the coils in the wrong order. Yea big mistakle but at the time the tuning was off so it was hard to tell and I didn't boost it really. So anyway long story short. I got the car up to my master of disaster Ray Wilson of PFSupercars and started tuning and came across the problem, compression tested and realized the compression was low on the back and you can figure out the rest.

Small mistake on my part that cost me a motor. What can I say. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

I am the guy that did the negotiation for us. They mis labeled our names though, so it said my name was Dave Localio or some ****. Close but no https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png The car we raced is mine. Matt, the other shop owner with me, had never driven the car before, but I figured that I would negotiate better since it was my car, so Matt drove. Only prolem was that he had never driven my car before. That showed I thought as he sucked the first few and got better as we went on. Plus the last run I turned the boost up to 12psi https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png
