sound is a constant higher toned whirring...seems to be coming from alternator area but i'm not sure.

did a search here in 3rd Gen and these were the possibilities:

1) alternator

2) air pump

3) uim

can someone suggest anything further? no other bad signs (yet), just noise.

thanks people!

does it change with acceleration, on or off inder throttle, or not noticeable. airpumps have been known to make noise @ idle when the clutch mechanism is going out.

it could also be the inner ring bearing bedind the alternator......but then, that could also sound like a metal to metal shearing sound....

Thanks Fikse & Lou (r_xplicit) for responding.

> When you say check the pullies, do you mean tightness?

> I don't seem to notice any change in the sound upon accelerating or decelerating, but then again it's more difficult to hear when I'm driving since the hood is closed and also ambient noise. I would guess it's a pulley or the alternator just from the fact that the sound is a constant whirring, but I don't hear a metal-against-metal shearing sound. As far as the airpump going bad, would that make a constant sound like I have?

thanks fellas,
