I've heard bad things on using a miata thermoswitch. Very bad things.

Nah I've had the miata thermoswitch for a long time and it's never been an issue. I also have the fans run to a toggle in the cabin. I run the fans when sitting in traffic sometimes. I don't really need to though. I run Evans in a Mazda comp radiator and my temps have been solid at 80-90c the past few weeks. I have my fans programmed with the AEM to kick on at 90c.

What ECU are you running? If your a aftermarket ECU, thats why. But in a stock ECU the thermoswitch controls more than just when the fan's turn on, and the miata settings are differnet than what they are supposed to be in a FD. Thats just what I heard anyway, but a power FC controls everything anyway, so in the end, its all the same.

when i used to actually have fans on the car, i had them hardwired so they came on anytime the car was running.

Who told you that? I've never heard that the thermoswitch does anything but report back to the ECU on the coolant temp. And I've never heard of anyone having any problems with a miata thermoswitch or the FC thermoswitch. I've had mine for over two years, wired as Fd3BOOST described. I have full control of the fans, they come on at a safer (lower) temp and they will stay on for 10 minutes after shut down to reduce under hood heat a bit. Simple, effective and best of all, cheap. Absolutely no issues.

^Oh, and I'm running a bone stock ECU. I don't think an an aftermarket ECU would change anything.

Well, since changing it and nothing else changes how the fans act, then it's not just sending a signal to the ECU. If that was the case, then no matter what car it was out of, it would send the same signal. I'm guessing that it's just a 0/1 switch the opens or closes at a certain temp, but doesn't tell the ECU anything other than open curcuit/closed curcuit.



I'm still wondering why people are trying to figure out alternatives to the Thermoswitch/fan switch set-up. To me it seems to be the easiest and most reliable way to do it. Hardwiring is cool, but I don't need the fans all the time now. The turbo timer method works, but why do something that requires you to shut off the car, wair for the TT to shut off the engine, turn the key back on, reset the TT to 10 minutes or whatever, before you finally get to walk away. I'm not sure how many of you have checked this, but with the fan switch, you don't have to wait the 30 seconds then flip the switch off for it to work. The relays wil kick off after 10 minutes even with the switch still closed, so basically you can hit the switch in the morning, leave it alone, do everything you need to do for the day, the fans will work like you expect all day, then turn it off when you park for the night.

I stand corrected . In my mind that's sort of what I meant, but stated it all wrong. I may have been thinking of the Intake Air Thermosensor, which is putting out the occasional CEL on my car right now.

Regardless, I've never heard of anyone having problems from it.

So let me get this straight. You guys have been letting the fans stay on with the car off(as in engine not running) so the fans cool the water that is in the radiator? Seems retarded to me.
