Hi



Please can someone enlighten me.



I have a homemade a/f meter with 10 leds. 3 green (rich), 4 yellow (stoic), and 3 red (rich).



While cruising in 4th gear at 35mph ( approx 2000rpm ) my meter will be flicking between red & yellow

but then I can hear what sounds like the air pump coming on and my meter flicks to the first green led.

In my case that is the 'power led' the one the lights under WOT.



The pump can stay on a while unless you take your foot off the gas, it will then go full lean but the cycle then repeats.



Cruising at higher speeds, approx above 45mph this doen't seem to happen.



Is this behaviour normal for the air pump ??

Take the air pump off Thats my opinion. They are pointless.

 

The airpump was the first thing to go on my car.

 

If he is just about anywhere from Colorado and west the airpump isnt pointless.

 

the air pump is a clutch style pulley/tensioner, and under specific load [>~4K rpm] is not used, or useless, or should i say, non funcitonal.......it disengages and just free spins.....so therefore it is not doing anything above say, 4500 rpm.....it is solely for emissions and what not.....

 

Is it OK to remove the air pump ? I am running the stock ECU.



I'm sure I read somewhere in one of these forums that your

car will idle badly without the air pump.

Yep. When I took off my air pump my car ran so rich at idle that it surged badly and fouled plugs if left at idle for too long. After pulling some fuel out down low it was fine. So because you haven't got an adjustable ECU, I wouldn't advise you rip off the pump.

 

i had the same problem when i took off my pump. I have a PFC now (it has the setting for removed or disabled airpump) so i dont get the idle problems anymore. only thing im worried about is my main cat clogging up in a few months, eh that will be my excuse for open exaust..... i still need catback though.... damn im sad.



blargh anyway if u remove ur airpump be sure to cap off the two pipe ends coming from buhind the intake manifold or else ull hear a loud annoying noise hard to explain but it goes away once plugged up.



ps it makes the engine bay look a lot roomier plus u can see ur turbos from above the car

How do I access the settings to disable the airpump on the PFC? My idle is surging like crazy once I removed the airpump. Thanks!

 

its in one of the settings, u look and it says O2 pump or something and select the japanese symbol next to it and change it (all the symbols look the same for "on" change it so it is diff "off"



ill take a pic of the screen and get ack to u with the exacts in a few
