does anyone here know if i can install a 13b cosmo intake manifold into my fd? i love the way it looks and i know it have bigger runners too. just wondering if anyone tried this.

FD3S DRIFT 09-16-2003 11:30 PM

where did you get that thing i want one?

i think jspecracer is doing this as well.

IGY 09-17-2003 03:26 AM

If you do this, you want to use the Fd throttle body or the 20b throttle body. The 13b cosmo throttle body is smaller than Fd.

grngtcfd3s 09-17-2003 09:42 PM

so can i bolt it up to my fd? do i need to modify anything?

andynogo 09-17-2003 10:14 PM

I think (but not sure) you have to use the cosmo lower inlet as well.

The other difference is that the cosmo motor has substantially larger intake ports on the plates- another 5mm or so larger on the bottom of the port, so if you use the lower cosmo intake as well you should port your FD plates to match.

Fd3BOOST 09-17-2003 11:27 PM

Yea I belive that your gonna need the lower half to go with that.

It's on Ebay right? I just saw that myself.

jspecracer7 09-18-2003 01:06 AM

I'm assembling parts right now to put a 13B cosmo onto my FD. For optimum performance you'll need:

1) the 13B cosmo lower intake manifold gasket(so if you port your motor, port match it to the gasket)

2) 13B Cosmo lower intake manifold

3) 13B cosmo upper to lower intake manifold gasket

4) 13B cosmo upper intake manifold

5) 20B cosmo throttle body

6) throttle body elbow of your choice

7) 13B Cosmo fuel rail(or fabricate your own)

8) block off the ACV on the outside of the 13B cosmo lower intake manifold

You can use the FD throttle body, HOWEVER if you go this route, you will need to get rid of your idle control valve. The reason you want the 20B throttle body is 1) It's bigger. 2) It already has an idle control valve on it.

You will need to relocate your air temp sensor to the throttle body elbow(or you could tap the cosmo intake manifold) and you will need to take off your FD TPS and bolt it up to the 20B cosmo throttle body.

Not the hardest project in the world. I think the hardest thing will be to get the throttle cable to work.

grngtcfd3s 09-18-2003 01:21 AM

are all the parts hard to get? should i start to buy them piece by piece to get a set, or is there someone/where you know where i can get it all at once? Thanks for all the great info!

jspecracer7 09-18-2003 02:19 AM

Piece it together...I'm in japan and I'm having a hard time finding the pieces. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

RotaryRevolution 09-18-2003 10:08 PM

what exactly is the benifit in doing this? how much more efficient is it

jspecracer7 09-19-2003 08:28 AM

I'll get pics of the manifold design up soon. You'll see the difference in intake runners.

Here's what you'll need for the swap minus the throttle cable.

jspecracer7 09-21-2003 01:57 PM

Here's a shot of the runner difference. Pic's a little fuzzy, but you get what I mean...

jspecracer7 09-21-2003 02:02 PM

The FD upper intake has an idle control valve on the side of it's upper intake manifold, where as the Cosmo 13B does not. However, the 20B throttle body has an idle control valve on the throttle body. This setup seems as if it may work. Here's pics of both.

Here's a pic of the inside of the upper intake manifold.

and here's a comparison on the length of the overall manifold w/ throttle body and throttle body elbow. It is much shorter than the FD, but it will fit with the stock oil filler neck just fine. I didn't have an FD throttle body and elbow handy at the time of this picture, but it speaks for itself.

jspecracer7 09-21-2003 02:14 PM

The 13B Cosmo throttle body elbow is made of aluminum, so it can be cut to length if need be and tig welded for whatever angle you'll need. I don't have P/S so I will be using 100mm aluminum piping going to it from the intercooler.

...and this is getting pinned. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

93 R1 09-21-2003 02:15 PM

Sounds like a pain in the ass. What kind of gains are you expacting to see?

jspecracer7 09-21-2003 02:22 PM

lots of top end power. Not necessarily a pain in the ass. Just need lots of prior planning...which I've already done https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Good **** Van, thanks for the pretty side by side shots. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Now find me all that **** and send me a bill.

You forgot to mention that all those parts will polish up quite nicely.

Fd3BOOST 09-22-2003 09:23 PM

Do any of you fuckers have that **** installed yet?

ie.. pics?

I'll proly have it all done within the next month. Gotta concentrate on some other things, but I think I can get it all to work just fine. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

twinturbodork 09-24-2003 06:15 PM

how hard would it be to just swap in a 13b cosmo complete engine, what is the hp/torque and weight on it.

also how much better is it than the normal 13b?

AgentSpeed 09-24-2003 10:49 PM

Motor mounts are different for one thing.

jspecracer7 09-25-2003 03:50 AM

Only real differences between the two engine's (13B-RE Cosmo vs. 13B-REW FD3S) would be the intake port size and the exhaust port size. Intake is slightly larger than FD, but the exhaust port is heavily restricted. They did this to create more torque for the engine.

The motor mounts and the oil pan are also different.

The intake manifold swap is EASY guys. The hard part is the throttle cable, tapping the new air intake temp sensor, redoing the TPS so that it's within specs and the throttle body elbow intercooler piping. Proly 4 hours at the most...A 13B-REW to RE swap would proly take MUCH longer than 4 hrs.

AgentSpeed 09-25-2003 04:49 AM

The Cosmo UIM just looks bad ass. Might have to put it on the list of things to do. Isn't the 13B RE a good swap for a 2nd gen???

Yes, you will need to do a single turbo conversion however because I don't think the cosmo manifold/turbos will fit.

K2RD also sells the motor mounts to put the 13B RE in the FC as well, makes it easy to do the swap.

jspecracer7 09-25-2003 01:43 PM

true...forgot about that...and these motor mounts are also the ones they'll need for a 20B swap https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683894.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

what gains would a guy expect so see with the cosmo uim swap and 20b tb?

what are the specs on the 13b-re cosmo

With the Cosmo LIM/UIM and 20b TB, I should expect to see the most gains at the top end, especially with my Turbo. Granted, with a stock turbo car, I doubt there will be enough HP gain to warrant a swap. Since I've got big exhaust ports and a big turbo exhaust housing w/ 9000 rpm shifts...this is where I should see the best HP gains out of the cosmo LIM/UIM/20B TB. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/cool.png

Doesn't anyone make aftermarket intake manifolds for rotories? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif

They got um for everything else.
