So, I traced this loud roaring sound on my car to a bad front wheel bearing. I get the new bearings and a seal from NAPA and I'm ready to do the job tonight. No big deal, I've done it before on other cars.



Well, now I know that the RX-7 has an aluminum hub with pressed-in outer races, and the manual says to replace the bearings and the hub all together! The dealer wants like $300. for a hub and bearings. What do I do now? Has anyone ever gotten the races out of the hub without tearing it up? Should I just put the new bearings in with the old races? Arrrrgggghhhhh! :madgo:

Just make sure that you have all of the tools you need before you tackle the job.

 

Woo Hoo! I am happy to report that the operation was a success. The biggest problem I had was finding a tool hard enough to drive out the bearing races without chipping the tool all to heck. It takes a pretty solid whack with a pretty big hammer on a pretty big punch before they will budge, and the bearing races are super hard, so whatever you're striking them with will sustain some damage. Took me a couple hours, but she's running smooth and quiet now! :bigok:
