My wife is getting me a mazdatrix short shifter, for the s4, for Valentines Day. She wants to get me a knob as well. On the voo doo site it says it will fit a miata and fds. Does anyone know if it will fit an s4 fc? I've seen pics of people with voo doo knobs in their fc.

drunkin_idiot 01-25-2005 05:15 PM

Ya I think those people have S5 shifters, I have a an S4 with a C's short throw shifter and it has the S5 threads ie miata and FD's

Well can i use an s5 shifter? Or does anyone know of any nice knobs that will fit and s4 shifter? i don't want to have to rethread anything.

drunkin_idiot 01-25-2005 06:22 PM

Im pretty sure you can no problem. Just bolts right in.

GreyGT-C 01-25-2005 07:05 PM

i thought all of the import cars had the same/universal shifter knob threads?

j9fd3s 01-25-2005 07:43 PM

just get an s5 shifter, then the miata knobs will go right on, thats what i did

Baldy 01-25-2005 08:06 PM

E-mail sent to Mazdatrix...hopefully they can change the order with no problems (order was placed early this evening).

mazdaspeed7 01-25-2005 09:02 PM

The S5 shifter has the same threads as the miata and FD. I believe S4 has the same threads as the S2000.

I have a voodoo shift knob from an S2000, with a custom short shifter in my GTU.

i'm 90% sure thats right, or it was some kind of mr2, but they do make one in the right thread size for s4, they just dont know it

Baldy 01-25-2005 09:59 PM

well hopefully they can change the order without any hassle, just to eliminate some confusion in the long run.

i'm confused now!

Baldy 01-26-2005 08:04 AM

We had already ordered the S4 shifter, then started looking for knobs. After realizing that the knob selection for the S4 was lame, and the voodoo knob kicks ass, I want to go with the S5 shifter.

https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png ok i'm up to speed! i put an s5 shifter in mine and i used an fd knob, cause i like those

ReactionEffect 01-26-2005 01:48 PM

For the S4 guys who want a voodoo knob, order one for a Toyota truck or MR2 Spyder.

voodoo site says those thread patterns are 12x1.25, yet I've seen a couple places that the S4 shifter has a thread pattern of 12x1.5.

SPD Racing FC 01-26-2005 02:47 PM

i run a mazdaspeed shift knob on my mazdatrix shifter

Baldy 01-26-2005 02:58 PM

Ok, what if I decide to rethread it, how involved is that? I've never really successfully rethreaded or tapped anything.

nismo convert 01-26-2005 06:23 PM

i know the WRX has the same threads as one of the fc's just not sure which one

I did that, it took me longer to get out the drill and tap set then it did to actually do it. Mine was engraved as well, which if you dont get the knob before hand, mark center, then send it back to them, you wont have the engraving face the right way.

Then again I ordered my knob long before I, as well as voodoo, found out the thread size for my car, long before I stumbled upon Nopistons.com as well!

Matter if fact- I had to send the engraving guy voodoo uses the RX-7 logo so he could engrave it on the knob.

So I take it you rethreaded the knob, and not the shifter, correct? So I just need to find the 12x1.5 drill/tap combo, and go to town on the knob? Sorry, I get so worried when it comes to rethreading stuff. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif

I have a Mazdatrix short shifter in my FC and i just bought a Greddy counterweighed shift knob that was use on a WRX.. it goes in 3-4 threads down and stops.. its weird.. I love the knob since its heavy..it makes shifting smoother..

Rob x-7 01-27-2005 06:06 AM

I used a "Z" drill bit and the appropriate tap on the knob, didnt touch the shifter.

I CALL SHENANIGANS ON THREAD ABUSE!!!!!!!!! Unless you like it loose and sloppy!

Standard Drill size for M12 Nominal size and thread diameter is 10.20mm (.4015")(recommended) and 10.40mm[.4094] (Alternate)

Z bit diameter 0.4130"

Baldy 01-27-2005 09:36 AM

Should I be able to find these sizes at any place that sells tools?

banzaitoyota 01-27-2005 09:58 AM

www.msc-direct.com

Baldy 01-27-2005 10:12 AM

Is M12x1.5 even a real size?? I don't see it on the list of taps. Why must something so simple be so difficult...

banzaitoyota 01-27-2005 10:16 AM

12 x 1.50mm

Baldy 01-27-2005 10:18 AM

ahhh, it was on a different page. Thank you, oh wise garage guru.

banzaitoyota 01-27-2005 10:34 AM

MSC's search feature is awesome. Type in TAP and select size from pulldown menu

Of Course that info conflicts with the chart in Machinery's handbook. For a 12 x 1.5 thread, the Z drill would be acceptable. My apologies ROB!

the Snap On metric tap and die set will give you the drill bit of Z to be used, which I did, and I then tapped it with a 12x1.5 tap, its been on my car for years now

I was going off real world expierence, not internet mumbo jumbo. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

banzaitoyota 01-27-2005 09:10 PM

I hardly call MACHINERY's HANDBOOK Mumbo-Jumbo!

Rob x-7 01-28-2005 06:06 AM

I would not call my Snap On tap and die set incorrect either

Baldy 01-28-2005 07:55 AM

so either should work fine then?

banzaitoyota 01-28-2005 08:49 AM

yes, for what you are doing
