Temp, comfortable around low 70s. The car made it through the dead of summer without the gauge ever going above 1/2 (where it always sits). No belly pan, sitting in traffic, never got hot.

On my way from lunch a few minutes ago, the coolant buzzer buzzes for a few seconds then stops. I think, "oh well, guess it's time to add more coolant to top it off." I noticed the gauge went up between 5/8 and 2/3 towards hot, which kinda freaked me out. Got to work, popped the hood, and I see coolant bubbling out from under the cap (on the filler neck), steam going everywhere. WTF? Thermostat stuck closed maybe? I still have to make it home today. I've never had this happen, and it worries me. Just when I start to think my car is finally reliable.

But how high up on the temp gauge can the needle go before damage happens?

That's the beauty of factory temp guages, H and C are as about as technical as they get.
