Weird oil filter problem.

Today I changed my brother's oil, and when I started the car I heard a sucking sound and oil was all over thge place. The car lost about 2 1/2 quarts. The o-ring on the filter came out of place. It must have happened while I was screwing it onto the housing, because it looked fine when I was oiling up the o-ring. Oh well, another weird problem. ???
