Water temp sender- solved!
Today I pulled the thermostat housing off the car, went to my friends welding shop. Turns out all we had to do was first drill out the housing where the factory didnt being as the car doesnt have a second sender in the housing. Then using the 3/8 NPT to 1/2 NPT fitting that the Auto Meter gauge came with, he welded the 1/2 fitting to the housing, which gave it the perfect clearance so that the temperature sending probe would clear the thermostat. It took him all of 5 minutes. The Auto Meter adapter that came with the gauge had the threads in it obviously for the 3/8 threads, so we didnt have to tap threads in anything, and it is aluminum, so problem solved! I should have my digital camera later, Ill post a pic
I was going to tap that spot also, and always saw it as convient, but i think im going to put it past the thermostat for a more accurate reading, but then again, when the engine is cold and the thermostat is closed, which means no coolant, what would the water sensor be reading? just cold until it opened ??? what would be the point of putting it there then?

You get to see the temperature of the water coming out of the motor. That's the same spot that Mazda uses for the water thermosensor.
If im not mistaken, to take the water pump off, dont you have to remove everything around it? Maybe if you only have a alternator, but for me with A/c,p/s,air pump, and a alternator, it looked like more trouble then it was worth. The factory gauge will still work, I was looking at the mechanical gauge being more usefull when im driving the car to make sure I dont overheat. With the thermostat closed youll still get a temperature reading, it will be the same reading as the pump, maybe a few degrees lower due to the fact its upstream from the radiator. And the best part was I didnt have to tap into a thing on the car, only weld the small bung onto the thermostat housing. I got my new digital camera today, Ill post the pic tomoroww when I load the software into the computer.

ah i see the light! I always wonder where it got it from i was hoping it wasn't rad cuz that would be mad inaccurate, cool thxs "G"
