Trying to get some light on guages.
The lights for the stock gauge cluster. S5 '90 model. I was thinking about just throwing in a whole new gauge cluster but then my mileage has to be taken into account because the car has low original miles and the cluster I got with the closest mileage is still like 20K more.
Im gonna end up putting that to the test this weekend I think. It seems the previous owner of the car was making a much bigger problem than he needed to with the wiring overal and probably fried some stuff.....pain in the butt.

Mine has the same problem, I don't think it's the light guage itself i think is has to do with the surround and the switches around it...
mine had the exact same problem. all the gauges worked and everything functioned as it should on the panel BUT the dash lights. The headlight switch on the left side of the bezel which also controls the dimness/power of the gauge/dash lights did something odd. It only fried the circuit for the dash lights, but not the exterior lights. Headlights function normally along with all other outside lamps. My solution at first was: replace the switch, duh. After three failed attempts to right the wrong in the confusing switch which seemed to always burn out the same circuits...I came to the conclusion to just direct wire a toggle switch to the wire that would normally control the dash/gauge lights. I have it on a 3 prong switch wired GROUND/ACC(lights)/FUSE(power only ignition is on) it has worked fine for me. Plus, any time anyone gets in the passenger seat and say "wuts dat switch for right there lol!?" I can make some dumb excuse like "it makes the car whistle" or something awful like that. Hope this helps for what its worth.

I seem to remember the problem being the harness that goes to the switch, I remember it being a short harness that would melt together, replace the harness or take it apart and replace with heavier gauge wire.
My lights act up now and then, I tap the dimmer switch with my finger just a tiny bit and they go back to normal.
Been like that for the 15 years I have owned the car so I never did a thing about it.
