Could someone help me out-- My S5 NA tranny just went crazy today. I was moving the shifter back and forth in the parking lot today, and the tranny went berzerk. The shifter no longer goes into 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse, and neutral somehow became reverse. (When I turn on the car and gradually let go of the clutch when in neutral, the car goes backwards....) I can physically shift into 1st and 2nd, but the car just stalls when I let go of the clutch on these gears.

This suddenly happened, and my car's still in the parking lot! Someone help!

Thanks in advance-

You're pretty well fucked.

In all liklihood you sheared the knuckle off the shifter shaft assembly (pull off the tail housing and probably the pieces will fall out, should be pretty obvious).

I've done this twice.

Essentially you're stuck in reverse, and if you you put it in 1st or 2nd your in two gears at once.

The second time I did this I cracked the ring gear too.

I decided to just get a used trans from a friend since I managed to break mine twice in exactly the same manner (just did it worse the second time).

FWIW, I was just cruising along as 60 mph, clutched and pulled it into neutral as I was coming up on a toll booth when it happened to me. Don't get me wrong, I've abused my trans a good bit, but it was gentle drivinga ll day long both times it happened to me.

If you won't got thru the trouble to fit a TII trans in there, then at least get a used unit and swap them out. Then fix the broken unit at your liesure and save it in reserve. I personally don't have a good thing to say about these NA units, but plenty of people tell me I'm wrong. They tell me how they put down 1,400 RWHP and 3 second quarter mile times using the NA tranny. All I can say is that this is one of the most common failures, and if you search around you'll see that you and I aren't the only ones to have experienced it.

Like I said, do the work to swap in a TII unit if you can. Its the only real way to be sure you're not getting another POS trans.

Thanks alot guys.

I feel a little more at ease (if possible...) hearing that I'm not the only one who's had this problem. At the moment, I can't afford a T2 tranny swap, so I'm just looking around the nearby junkyards for some NA ones.

Big *****, how difficlut is it to repair the shifter shaft assembly? I'm considering keeping th blown unit as a spare.
