gsl-se:
not the first gen with a 13-b you're thinking about...
gsl being the base model for 86 (4 lug, single piston callipers etc) but it was offered with a "sport package" (ooh my car says "SPORT") with 5 lugs, 2 piston callipers, "sport tuned" (there it is agian!!!) suspension, and blah blah blah. kinda cool when you talk about it, but a bitch when ordering parts. I ordered a bunch of stuff that didnt fit/work before I figured out I was better off calling it a GTU. everythings been honkey-dorey since. I dunno if the drivetrain was changed in the package though.... I doubt it.... still, I'd hate to buy something like a transmission for this beast that didnt fit.
FC: I didnt doubt ya man, just wanted to know which bearings.
J9: you're awesome! thats what I was looking for.
so now, where do I get a rebuild kit for a transmission or is this a "buy every little part individually" thing where I'd be better off buying a rebuilt one.
this is kinda exciting, I've never been in a transmission before!

now that I think about it, I know a local guy thats parting out a 91 coupe... think it'll work? and more importantly: if it did, would I still be legal for SP-autox/ ITCS? (read: will anyone challenge me at the track? and if they did, would they be able to tell?)

(had to go look)
no, it says (or would say if they were origional) GSL on the fenders. the brochure and the dealer sticker (the one in the window when it was new) has an area where it says "SPORT PACKAGE" and gives all the details (it also says "california emissions", but we dont talk about that). also if you look up the vin # (like I did when none of the parts were fitting) on carfax or anything like that it'll say "GSL-SE"

that aint right. if its a second gen it'll say gxl or se but not both. either way it needs a trans...

Dont try the rebuild yourself unless you have done a few before, the bearings have to be pulled off with a bearing puller and the rx tranys have some very long pulls 24 to 30 inches in some cases.
cant be pulled end to end like on some other tranys.
better to find a good shop or buy a rebuilt trans.
