there is this god awful noise comming from my transmission. I sure its something common, I've seen topics on here before about it, yet my search yields nothing... WHAT IN THE **** IS IT? its driving me absolutely up the wall! I'm positive its a cooked bearing (what else sounds like constant grinding metal?), but which one? the noise follows the RPM's in neutral, when the clutch is pressed it goes away, (so its something on the input shaft only) and like I said, 4th gear is quiet as a mouse. its been doing this as long as anyone can remember, (atleast 3 years now) so I'm not desperate for info or anything, just sick of turning up the radio. thanks Hill |
Sounds like you bearings are toast, get a rebuild.

i believe the throw out bearing is the culprit of noise like that, when it only happens with the clutch out.
i could be wrong |

I agree with lee it does sound like a throwout bearing. I second that |
thought bout the throw out bearing, but if it was, wouldnt it do it in fourth gear too? after all, the clutch doesnt know what gear you're in, its mated to the flywheel, it only knows in, out and RPM's.
thought the gear ration being 1:1 in fourth (right?) might have something to do with it being quiet... like... well shoot, I dunno. I do have a clutch assembily in my garage... bearings included, maybe if I get a day (or two) off I'll put her up on jacks. |

Could also be some messed up synchronizers...that means rebuild which prolly wouldnt hurt anyways. Sucks to have to do but that will save you a lot of trouble in the end. |
the trans bearings are bad, the middle countershaft bearing and the input particularly...
|
^^^ YES thats why it doent make noise in 4th b/c its direct drive
|
Reffer to first answer, your bearings are toast, get a rebuild.
