when i swap my auto to manual in the vert which trans should i use? whats the difference between the s4 and the s5 trans? is there a difference between the 86 trans and 88 trans? my vert is an 89.

The NA transmissions had two different styles of trannies that I know of... they call the better one a "ribbed" transmission. This is the most common, but there was another one that was not ribbed, it just has a smooth casing and was supposedly weaker. I'll see if I can find a pic of the one we had a while ago at the shop.



As for '86 to '88, you should be fine...the GTUs in '89 had a different gear ratio, it was more similar to the T2 I think... but other than that, all S4 and S5 NA trannies share the same gear ratio.
