Throttle cable adjustment
After driving and fixing my 1st Gens over the past 22years, I found a cherry 87 with 110,000km.Although not as quick as my old car,it's been excellent for about 6month so I've left it alone. However recently,it seems slower than normal ,so I got out my manual and started checking things out.The throttle cable seemed to have a great deal of slack so I adjusted it at the throttle body.My manual says, the cable should have 0.04 to 0.12 in. of free play.Is this the amount of actual slack ,up and down, in the cable itself ,or is there another way to measure? Also, it states that the throttle valves should be fully open when the accelerator is pressed to the floor. When I look into the throttle body, the plates appear as not quite open.If I reach into the throat of the throttle body ,I can open them further, manually ,with my finger. So, as the manual instructed,I attempted to adjust it at the pedal .This had no effect and the throttle valves remain slightly closed when the accelerator is fully depressed.Am I chasing wild geese or have I missed something? Thanks for your help! BT

i think the thing you're looking at is the double throttle. they have that there as a choke, so they should be closed when the car is cold, and open when the car is warm. if it doesnt open (common on the gsl-se's) the car is really slow.
freeplay also needs to be checked warm, its kind of a feel thing but it should be a little looser than you'd think

Thanks for your reply. The slack at the cable ...I could move it about 1/2 an inch BOTH up and down. This seems way too much to me.I am talking about the double plates inside the throttle body. They are not quite open at full throttle. Can I adjust this? It doesn't mention this in my manual as being a choke and they open when the accelerator is pushed?!??.Thanks for your time.BT

1/2 inch either way sounds about right.
it acts kinda like a choke, theres a vacuum line thats hooked to a little diaphram that actuates those throttle plates. you can disconnect that or wire the plates open to see if thats the problem

Thanks for the reply.Guess I should adjust the cable back! Seems like a lot of slack to me.The manual says"check the cable freeplay at the throttlebody"."Throttle cable free play is 0.04 to0.12 in." Where do I measure this.I assume it's not the slack in the cable.Wishing I was a little smarter...... Thanks BT
