I just bought an 86 GXL. I read somewhere that the Temp. gauge should sit just below half way when warmed up. on a six hour drive home it went from a hair below to ahair above half way. Does this indicate a problem or no? I should say that before I drove it home I had the cooling system flushed and the oil changed. Oh and the car has 65k on it and (I know it's lame) it has an Auto Trans. It is a sweet ride though .

did it just get flushed? like you could have a bit of air in the system?

that's a long drive and you'll probably get a bit of heat soak out of it.. not like it really fluctuated that much so you would think you're good to go.

stock gauge is unreliable and not accurate.

Are you sure it's not 17/32 up the gauge?

About half way up the gauge is normal, start to worry if it gets over 47/64 the way up the gauge.

get a real temp guage... it should read somewhere between 180-190.. my car runs a constant 182 on the highway and sitting in stop/go traffic it will creep to 190-195. It's never hit 200. i also have an E-fan which is great for stop-go traffic. get your self a real temp guage and an electric fan and you'll be fine.

the stock guage (s2-s4) is just as good as any aftermarket one. it just not labeled.

c = 65c/150f H = 115c/235f

Thanks eveyone. I guess I'm good..I'll just label my current gage in 64'ths with a grease pencil and save money for an electric fan. Adam

keep the stock fan set up, it works really well and there is no

need to change it.

Doesn't the stock fan make a lot more power than an electric would? It definitely sounds like it. I mean, it's powered by a 130 hp engine in your case not a .5 hp electric motor.
