to tell you the truth i am not sure if it is possible but the engine is all in one piece and it has 13B irons. i havent taken a really close look at it all since we just loaded it in the car pretty quick.
Ok, now im lost.

yeah i know that was the thing that made me think. When we finish pulling the stock 13b out i am going to take some side by side pictures and compare to the two.

On the 85 and earlier engines, one can use 12A irons with the 13B housings from an S3 or the 74-78 engines. All this does is convert an S3 engine from a 6-port to a 4-port. The 74-78 engines were all 4-ports. My only concern is the 1st gen engines are front mount and I don't believe any of the 1st gen center irons have the bolt holes needed for the 2nd gen motor mounts.
It's quite easy to mount a 2nd gen 13B and later engine in a 1st gen and earlier chassis by simply swaping in the 13B oil pan appropriate for the chassis, along with a 1st gen front cover. However, the reverse is not true due to the lack of holes needed for the passenger side center motor mount.
