not self leveling, and on the gxl there was an option for what is called A.A.S. , or auto adjust suspention. now im not sure if that was an option for the gtu or not but that my be what you have. all aas des is switch from a sport type suspention or a softer settin manualy plus has an aoutmatic switch internaly when the vehical sences it needs a ferm suspention , ie quick stops or abrupt turns.

I don't believe your 88 GTU should have the AAS suspension. It only came on GXL's if I'm not mistaken.
