I have just removed the sunroof from my "new" T2. I was wondering if anyone has left the sunroof off and had the hole welded shut. This car is being setup up mainly for track days. I will never use the sunroof and it's f#*king heavy.

If you have, how much did it cost you and do you regret your decision?

my sunroof has never worked. it rusted it self closed. i must ask though. how did you get that out??!?! i've tried everything! even manuvering my body and pushing with my legs to get it out, not even that worked.

I do have an idea about the sunroof.. and i really think it would work... ever ridden in a supra? know how hard that roof is to get off? (targa) well design something similar with our sunroof with a latch type thing on all four corners holding it on the inside. if you want it off unclip the latches and take it off (somewhat like a targa)

i dunno, it's just a thought. or you could have a shop make a peice of lexan/plexi to go there instead of the heavy metal itself. also just a though.

It took some effort, but it wasn't too bad.

1) Take down all the moldings, sun visors, laundry hangers, and lights/rear view mirror.

2) Remove headliner

3) Bang the **** out of all four corners of the sunroof from the bottom

4) Carefully take a screwdriver and pry away rusted and painted over gasket from body

5) Repeat step three

6) Remove all bolts from mounting brackets

7) Remove drain lines

8) Unscrew alll height adjustment bolts (nothing holding the sunroof on at this point except for rust and corrosion)

9) Get one hand underneath the front of the sunroof and bang from the top (carefully)

10) Repeat on other side, front should come down eventually

11) Work sunroof forward and down

12) The entire unit should pop out after some negotiating

I then cleaned the area of the body that is normally hidden by the sunroof. All kinds of dirt and crap caked on. Not too difficult. Be carefull when the sunroof comes down. It is awkward and slightly heavy. Let me know if you have any other questions or if I missed anything.

That sounds interesting. Would just have to figure out how to do it without the car looking ghetto and have no leaks. I'd have to tint it also. Something to think about.

The replacement sunroof is in. It took parts from three different sunroofs to make a complete working one. The only problem is that it's white. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683698.gif

I'm going to pull it back off and primer it for now.

nice work.. i am going to remove my sunroof. looks wise it's great, no rust or damage.. but it's just never worked. i've checked the gears and the motor, i can hear the motor CLICK, but nothing moves. stuck an allen wrench in the manual hole and stripped the gears out my self. In my previous post. about the supra targa top... hears another example of what i am going to try to do.. : ever been in a 944 porsche? the roof tilts up, but is also completly removable with a couple of latches. I am going to design a latch system (requires brain power) that way when i want the roof open just unlatch it and put it in the back.. that would be kinda sweet. half Targa/sunroof mod. i'll let you know.

Since you have a new sunroof in.. why not fix it so it can be used? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif
