If you just wanna keep up with the normal v8s, you're all right. But you're gonna need every mod you can get since ur vert is heavy. Get some headers and full exhaust, RacingBeat.com sells nice exhaust, it would be cheapest to buy their header and have a shop near u make up the rest of it. Rx7.com sells underdrive pulleys and intakes, Get an eletric fan and lose atleast the A/C if not P/S. Lose all the emissions stuff and to the TB-mod, found in the FAQ section up top. Lose all the dead weight, spar tire etc, your probably gonna need some nitrous, because of the weight issue, you wouldn't need more than a 50-shot, which any motor can handle w/o hurting it. Then u should be all good, gonna cost around 1000-1500.

I hate to say it, but if money is that hard to come by, enjoy the car in its stock form, it will treat you right. and last a long time.

Start modifying a tired powertrain and you will be breaking things, broken things mean more money on top of the money to modify.

just try to have those mustangs and camaros keep up with you on an exit ramp...or on a twisting back road..that is where any RX7 really comes to life..you can get a fresh motor from pineapple racing or revolution rotary for about 1600-2000..that will help with your power issue. Ported motors cost about $2400...

all in all....pimp that vert..you dont need power..the ladies dont care about that **** its just the looks (or when ppl ask you "what car is that?"

yeah it does matter how tired the motor is, you should do a compression test, my n/a motor w/ 151xxx miles on it had 125psi on both rotors so old doesn't necessarily mean tired.
