Finally got the engine back in the car, and now I can't get it to turn over. Starter just clicks when I turn the key. Smokes if i try it for too long. I pulled the starter out of the car and tested it, it seemed fine (the gear extended and turned). I can also turn the engine over by hand, so I know its not stuck. Any Ideas?

How good is your battery? I killed my Optima battery trying to unflood my car. Had to go buy a Die Hard.

It does the same thing when I jump start it from another car, so I'm assuming its not the battery.

What about the engine ground or things like that?

I'm certain all the wires on the starter are connected correctly, not so certain about the rest of the car. The starter is connected directly to the battery, so why would the engine ground matter? As far as I can tell, the negative terminal on the starter is grounded to the tranny anyway. Dont really want to roll start it since its the first time I'm starting the engine after the rebuild.
