Okay, so after running a personal best 13.96 last Friday on my stock hybrid turbo at 10 psi, the car is blowing so much smoke on shifts that they tell me I can't make any more runs until I fix the smoke problem. I wasn't sure if it was the motor or the turbo, but another well-known forum member who has drag racing experience with a T2 with a hybrid tells me my symptoms are the same as his when his turbo went bad.

So now I've got to pull the turbo, which was rebuilt about 100 miles ago, but more than the 6-month warranty period, and try to get some satisfaction from the rebuilder. The thing that bugs me the most is that this thing smoked from the day I put it on, which is what led me to believe it might be the motor that was smoking.

In the meantime, what turbo can I put on my car that won't burp any oil, but also won't force me to replace the manifold, intercooler, & ECU? (Cha-ching!)

If I do put on a new manifold and a T04, can I limit the boost to 10 psi and still run the stock AFM and ECU? I know its a bottleneck, but I really don't want to try to install and tune a Haltech this summer. I'd rather be racing.

i had the same thing happen to me when i built a turbo VW bug last summer. used a rebuilt IHI-RBH5 and that bitch smoked soo bad it seemed like the turbines were bein spun with oil not air. the bad thing was take the turbo off, start the car and no smoke.... really pissed me off.

if i were you, i'd definently see whats up with the person who did that turbo. sounds like some bullshit.

I recommend everyone installing a new or rebuilt turbo "prime" the turbo with oil before starting the engine. This is done by turning the engine for several seconds with the EGI fuse pulled.

I think the initial "dry" startup can do serious damage to the new parts that havnt had the chance to break in yet.

Done.

I followed the rebuilder's installation instructions to the letter. The oil supply line was attached, engine cranked with EGI fuse pulled, and oil pouring from the return line before I hooked the return up and started the engine. It was not started dry.

you can run a t04 turbo on the stock ecu, although i dunno how much boost is gonna be safe with that kinda setup, fuel wise

What do you guys think the stock boost will be on a Garret T3/T4 hybrid turbo? That's saying, that I am still using the stock wastegate and no type of boost controller, yet.

full exhaust and intake you will see upwards of 14#s depenind on the size of the turbine and turbine housing.

Without some kind of boost controller, the stock wastegate is going to try to limit you to stock boost levels.

What's the cheapest place to get a T04 setup? I love the look of the Greddy kit that Phins sells in the store, but man, that's a lot of loot! I might be willing to piece some stuff together to save a grand or so.

:goes to convenience store and buys lottery ticket...:

You mean with the T04 and the stock ECU? Will that setup be as fast at 7 psi as the hybrid at 10?
