Hey everyone. i Have a 1988 fc turbo II 10th ae. The other night i got on the gas hard and heard what i believe to be a pop. Then whenever i accelerated there is a high pitched whine(which increases in loudness with the rpms) but only when im accelerating. When i got home the car was jumping back and forth from 1000 to 1500 rpm. i shut the car off and came out the next morning to start it. the car started right up, but then immediatly climbed to 4 thousand rpms and stays there. it still makes the whine when the gas pedal is pressed while in neutral(havent tried driving it since). Also the car always idled high at around 1200 rpms but i dont know if that has anything to do with it. Any ideas about what went wrong and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

The first thing that comes to mind is a mechanical problem with the cable and/or linkage. I know if the cable comes off the half-round deal on the TB it will hold a really high idle.

How long have you had the car? The accelerated warmup system is supposed to give you a high idle when cold. Then you tap the gas and it should come down.

Hmm, could the whine be the turbo? Maybe the intake boot came off. The only other whine that comes to mind would eminate from the tranny.

Welcome to NP btw.

Cheers

thank you for your help. you were right about the idle i got the car at the begining of the summer so i never had to deal with the warm up idle, once i tapped the gas it came right down. But as far as the whine it is definitly the turbo. I took the car out and it seems as though the car is building no boost at all. The turbo never "kicks in" could this be because of the intake boot you spoke of? if so could you tell me what it looks like so i can attempt to re-attach it. Once again thank you for your help and warm welcome.

the pop you heard may have been a vacuum hose or an intercoole rhose popping off and so you may have a vaccuum leak, look for loose hoses. why it would whine, i dunno normally you dont hear stock turbos very much if at all.

it might be one of the trans bearings.

yes i have never heard the car make this whine untill now. Hopefully today i can take a good look at the turbo and the area surrounding it to see if anything is disconected. Im fairly certain its the turbo, the turbo is still working but the cars not getting any boost from it.

yea i took a look at the turbo itself and it is infact blown. there were metal shaving right up front. Do you think its safe to drive the way it is? i need transportation back and forth to school and its getting too cold for the bike.

If you need an s4 turbo, I can give you one for free. It has some shaft play but I don't think it'll be a problem. Let me know if you want it and all you'll have to do is pay for shipping.
