i have an 86 sitting in my garage and my one that i drive is a 91// both are na and the 91 is ps, the 86 is ms// can i swap the manual rack for the power one and make the 86 a ps and the 91 a manual?

also exactly how much am i looking at taking off my car to get at the rack on each?

i didnt see any other writeups on actually swapping the power one for a manual so i just want to know what im getting myself into before i start, if i start

Putting the manual rack in the 91 is pretty straight forward.

Do these cars have AC? If so see that they have the same type compressor so the brackets can be swapped.

Moving the PS system to the 86 is not hard except for the harness.

The 91 has RPM sensing variable assist integrated into it's harness.

The 86's harness should have connectors for the speed sensing (3 hose) variable assist.

I'm pretty sure you will have to custom wire the connections.

I would suggest shopping for a speed sensing PS system for the 86.

It was a better design than what's in the S5 NA's.

what all am i replacing in putting the manual rack in the 91// as in am i replacing the steering gear, intermediate shaft, tie rods gear boots?

i know that i would remove the pump but how far up the steering chain do i go,

i dont think that i will put the power steering in the 86 just yet, i dont have that much time to mess with electronics and such// besides i think 1 car will be enough trouble for now//

and aside from just seeing who is selling a manual rack on forums is there any place that i can get ahold of one that is not junkyard or mazda?

sorry, this would be my first time doing this, so im not sure at all on where to start

look in the FSM. you should only need to swap the racks, and put the pump on there. Dont put the power steering computer on just yet. See if there is no steering computer, it will go to default mode which is I think 60% assist? To some people that is the perfect amount of assist, but then if you want more assist, just wire up the ECU.
