1988 Turbo II. What is the purpose of the oil thermo unit (threads into the oil pan next to the oil level sensor) and what effect will it have on the car if it's unplugged?

I'm pretty sure it's wired straight into the sub-zero cold start assist system. It's just a thermoswitch.
