I had my battery charged, thinking it was bad. Then it still didn't start. Hit the starter with a hammer, then it started. So it's a bad starter, right?

I have a parts car in my yard, I'm assuming the starter is still on it. Should I swap it from there, or do all starters go bad after a certain mileage?

Auto parts store reman starter is $105.10, Mazda is $136.40.

once they get this old they seem to randomly fail, most of the time the starters are good.

spend the money on the mazda reman.

ive had a parts store one with an lifetime warranty, and i was using that every other week until i broke (literally, for the 4th or 5th time) down and bought a mazda reman

Good to know, I probably would've ended up buyint the parts store reman if not told otherwise, since I just bought a reman brake caliper from them.

Just for the hell of it, I think I'll install the one from the parts car, just to make some use of that hunk of crap in my yard. Then buy the Mazda reman when the money is easier to let go of, and carry it around with me.

Once again, thanks for the info.

How much was it?

I would have taken it to a starter shop, inexpensive and warrantied.

~135, and that doesn't include the $75 core charge or $15 for overnight shipping. Oh well, it was suggested to me that this was the better option.

I'll still have an extra starter, so maybe I'll get it rebuilt and sell it if it's cost effective.

Just called my local place the rebuilds starters, they say the new starters they get are only about $5-10 more or less than the rebuilt ones. I'm going to keep the Mazda one, but he says I can take by the old starter and they can get an exact estimate for free, in case I want to sell it.

Hmm.. Maybe it's more cost effective to rebuild them up here rather than down there..

There's starter/alternator shops everywhere, it's never too expensive to just rebuild them.. For us..
