Motor Replacement ?
Hey everybody
I'm new to the forum scene, so pardon any mistakes. My Question is somewhat long winded, normal for me, and I should state up front that I'm mechanically retarded and have to pay to have all mechanical stuff done on my rx. That stated, now the story. I have a 89 GTU, I bought it in 92, and was forced to sell it in late 93. It had 32,000 miles then. I was fortunate to buy "her" back in 2000, with 84,000 miles. The guy who had her in between took good care of her until a year before I got her back. He had health problems and died. His exwife slightly abused her before his death. His daughters took her and she sat for a year undriven or started. When I went to pick her up I had a really hard time getting her started and she smoked alot until she warmed up. I have put about 8,000 miles on her since, now she smokes sometimes alot ,sometimes a little and often not at all. Runs great even when smoking. I have taken her several places to try to fix the smoking problem and have spent close to $1,000.00 . I found that the last two places say there is no fixing, just replacing the motor. They say that when she sat for the year that the inside of the walls of the area that the rotor spins in had rusted and when I started it , it scored the wall and now oil leaks in and causes the smoke. SO ARE THEY BLOWING SMOKE UP MY REAR OR DOES THIS SOUND REASONABLE? I am grateful for all your help!

Hey i'm just gonna give some input on a problem i have with getting her started during the cold winter
Do you have to turn the engine over alot before it starts cause everytime the engine turns over your injecting oil that has to be burnt off when the engine starts
Also does it smoke even when it's warm and your driving around or just when you start it?
could be alot of things that ppl who work on normal piston engine know nothing about
Could be the oil metering pump injecting too much oil in the engine
My suggestion, get a Haynes manual. Probably the best investment you could make...

normally she starts right up once in a while if I haven't driven her she starts a little slow . She does smoke when I'm driving around sometimes a alot, I'm embarrassed , and sometimes just a little poof now and then and sometimes not at all, warm or cold. I have replaced the oil metering pump, with a used one from a reputable used dealer, and no change. I still have the old one just in case.
dude, i'm sorry to say, but it sounds as if it 'could' be your Oil Control Rings. I would get a compression check, see if both rotors are running substantially good. Than take it to a 'REAL' mazda RotaryMechanic
Not some *** backwards redneck with a ford mustang on the lift. (No offence to anyone)
and see how she checks out... Rotarys are very delicate machines... but when taken care of are awesome power plants. When and if you get her running i recommend chaning the oil EVERY 2000 Miles... i use Castrol 20w 50. There are alot of rumors about useing synthetics... but that's
So for now.. get your baby checked out from a real mechanic...
